Weatherstrip Questions

Is it necessary to use adhesive when installing new weatherstrip in our cars? For the door rubber, for example, I know there are plastic pins that secure the weatherstrip to the door, but do you also need to run a bead of adhesive along the edge of the rubber where it meets to underside of the door, for ultimate sealing? How about for the T-tops pieces?

Also, how easy is it to remove the old outer window felts and replace them with new pieces? Are whatever pieces of hardware that hold them in place fairly easy to access with standard tools?

Thanks for any insights.

Just put outer window felts on my 88. Not a bad job, remove the inner door panel, inner window guides so you can pull the window back, remove screws and install the new pieces. Unbolt the front triangle piece and rock it back to get to the forward screws. My strips were GM and I still had a couple holes that didn't line up so I had to drill to match. Nice finishing touch to the car though.

How long did it take you to do one side? Sounds like a bit of a pain in the ***, having to remove the door panel, window guides etc. I am not so much worried about the appearance of my old strips, but they are badly cracked. I don't want water getting down inside the door if I can avoid it.

it's not bad, just make sure you have the window down to remove the door panel, if you can wrap your hands around the top of the door, it's MUCH easier to get the panel off...

where are you guys getting the felt? I need inner and outer... and the rubber moulding around the door altogether.

PS. Bull, I love that Grand Prix, very sweet looking car... 400 Pontiac in that?

I just replaced all the weatherstripping on my hardtop. I didn't use any adhesive, everything locked right in. The door stripping had a large gap on the top front of both doors, but after a few days it molded to the door perfectly.

jimp, did you go with factory GM stuff, or aftermarket? Good to hear no adhesive is needed.

Sonix, I have found the window felts on Ebay, but I will probably buy mine from Hawk's, a board sponsor here, since I have read all positive reviews about that company and I like to support small businesses.
Thanks for the compliments on the GP...she does look pretty tough, IMO. Engine is a 455, but has been bored to 462, mild mods. Car hauls.

Got my outer strips from Hawks, actual GM stuff. I'm about due for the roof rail rubber that seals the window but I hear bad things about this unless using the GM stripping and that's expensive for this. I'll live with mine for as long as possible.

i recomend strongly to seal in those ttop rubbers as much as you can with urathane window seal caulking. I got some from the auto glass shop up the road to install my sunroof on my old saturn. Sure-seal makes it, and it dryes firm not sticky. The pain is if any little water gets under or down the side of your ttop rubbers it follows the channel in the roof and drains inside the car right close to the side window around where your ttops hook in.
