WTF is with this hatch?
Ok I got this car about 4 weeks ago and had this happen 3 times since I had it. First off the hatch itself will not open if you just turn the key like on my 92, you have to push the decklid down and find the "sweet spot" to pop it open.
But the problem is that I will close it and pulls down which seams to be alright, but once and a while I'll go to my car in the morning and the stinking hatch is WIDE open The last time it happened (this morning) I didnt even drive it sunday and it was fine, even got home late and it was still closed.
The switch on the dash doesnt open it thats the only idea I have to the problem, how do I get the switch out to at least test it? Or do I have another problem? BTW its a 88 formula, NO wing, new struts.

My guess...and it's just a guess...is that you have a faulty switch or a loose connection somewhere that occasionally sparks together and messes with your latch :P

The top back of the hatch pulldown (in the rear). It has one black wire on my unit I believe. There might be a relay under the dash of the car but I can't remember. I'm sure people that have more experience will chime in.

My hatch motor is always acting up as well, I actually have about 4 hatch motors in various states of disrepair sitting in my garage. I use them all for spare parts and as a reference to rebuild the motor in the car right now. They're quite handy. Try finding another one. Or 3...
