The price of the paint job is directly related to how close to show quality you want the paint to be. As a poor college student, you might want to hold off painting the car until after graduation or do the Maaco or Earl Schieb route for something cheap that will keep it from rusting. And, after graduation, spend the money to have a better job done on it.

For what it's worth, $3000 isn't that bad a price for a good paint job. My insurance company paid out $6000 to repaint my 92 after someone keyed it all the way around.

personally, materials would cost over a grand alone EASILLY
plus if you want to say $75 an hour labor, and the shop would charge you about 30-50 hours depending on what you wanted removed prior to painting, versus taping off.

There are thousands of factors, the main ones include the simple ones: Do you want the door jams painted? Under the hood? Inside the engine bay? Are you changing colors? How many layers of paint are under the current paint? Are you going for a base/clear, a single stage, or a tri-coat? Some shops even ask you how many coats of clear you want. Three? Four? Five? Six?

A decent paint job from a reputable shop can cost you anywhere between $2500 and $10,000 depending on what you're looking for.

Wait till january when Maaco usually has 1/2 off sale. $250. You could paint it every year for 24 years before you hit $6000. Mine still looks pretty good after 2+ years. After a wash and wax people still think its just been painted. And its black as well. IMHO. Especially like mentioned, get cheapo job while your a student, save 5K for other repairs/mods/expenses and repaint if it needs it later on. No one will notice unless you are taking the car to shows.

yeah, there are other factors too... like i dont have a garage for starters... and i drive the car a lot... so im not going to shell out money when its too tough to avoid bird crap, tree sap, etc. and the car is technically (kbb) only worth 2K. so i'd be assed out 4k if something *** forbid happened to it. some things to consider....

Trick to Maaco and Earl Scheib cheapies is to make the rounds until u find someone that can actually lay down paint.

Then buy your friends pizza and beer to hang new sheetmetal and do your body work with you.

Then pay the bozos to spray it.

They can lay down some decent paint(depending on the actual shop, they are franchises half the time), but I wouldnt trust them with doing any type of bodywork or prep.

The prep is why u see a Maaco car with paint splotches peeling off a 2 years later :-)

Still not my favorite route to go and I personally wouldnt do it as I know a few people who could spray my car for me now thought.

Shop around alot and look at work being done in process and ask for people who had cars done 2-5yrs ago and look at them also.

If u shop around and find he right person, I am more than willing to bet for about 2500$ you can get a damned good paint job. I know of about 4-5 off the top of my head that were right at that $$$ amount and more than likely , the same people will end up doing my cars eventually as well

Oh yeah, and looking a some stuff and talking to afew friends lately. It is possible to hit 800-1000$ in materials real quick if u buy the stuff yourself
later

I totaly agree with you. What is right for one may not be right for another. Just the way you put it struck me as very funny.

My dad is painting my car and we are doing all the body work ourselves. So far, with fiberglass, paint, primer, sealer, clearcoat, basecoat, bondo and self etching primer, i have spent about $1200 on just supplys. So it goes to show you that you get what you pay for. I wouldn't go Maaco, but maybe just do ALL the prep work and body work yourself at a friends and then save yourself some cash, but still be looking at $1500-$2000 bare minimum for a decent paint job.
