stragne interior floor panels

I striped out the interior of my 84 trans am to clean up any surface rust while the car is currently off the road today, While scraping 21 year old glue off the floor pans i noticed in front of each of the four seats there is a small remoavble panel maybe 2" by 3". WHen you take it off you can see the ground outside. No wires are coming through and its defiinitly not just a cheap patch job, because they are very uniform in size. What are they there for?

If I remember correctly, someone once said that those holes may also have been used in the manufacturing of the vehicles - that they may have been mounted on jigs from those holes. I have no idea if this is true or not tho....
