Ouch. My firebird was driven all last winter, and the previous owner drove it all year around, but it doesn't have any rust there.

thats pretty common for what i have seen, see if where the fender mounts to the rocker, that little tab that sticks down, is sticking straight down. chances are a previous owner tried to use that as a jacking point and bent the tab, and thus creating the rust. check out underneith your car in that area, i be you will find a good deal if it looks like that from the inside

yes that rust is very common, just got done fixing mine, if you have that, be prepared, both sides will be like that and the floor boards will be rusted also, that hole may even go outside behind the fenders, you should pull the carpet and see how bad it is and fix before it gets worse, some sheet metal, tools, welder and eastwoods rust encapsulator works well

i only worked on mine on the weekends, took me about 3 weekends, i cut the bad metal out, took a wire wheel to the floor and welded in new panels, you'll most likely have to take the nose off, i'm telling you that it rotted right throuhg to the outside, and then i covered everything in eastwoods rust encapsulator, and seam sealed with the eastwood seam sealer

heres some pics
