any tips on carpet intallation?

I got a new preformed carpet for my T/A. I want to make it fit well but it is in, i have fitted it and it needs to be helped along a little in certain areas to fit right. Any tips on making some of the bumps go away. Is it safe to make some relief cuts? This is the first time im doing this so any help would be appreciated. I know experience and a little experimenting will help but, id like to not mess up this brand new carpet. Another question i got the rubber sound deadener too and it seems to be making it hard to tape the carpet down, cause the tape doesnt stick too well to the rubber. What do you guys suggest for adhering the carpet down? Is the sound deadener worth it? Or should i just pull it out? Thanks guys!

I'd keep the sound deadener. Should make the interior car music sound better plus its supposed to help with heat/cold.

You can make some relief cuts as long as you hide them well.

I used 3M super adhesive. Comes in a spray can. Sticks well. Around $10. I also used it on the headliner. Its what the upholetry professional used when he did my first car's interior.

I didn't use tape anywhere...

I used no adhesive of any kind and my carpet sits perfectly. I also removed the OEM sound deadening. The pre-formed carpet should already be the right shape to fit the car for the most part. Let it sit out in the sun on a warm day for a couple hours before you install it. Once it's in the car, trim the excess, and cut "X" marks over the seat bolts to pull them through the carpet. Once everything is bolted back into place, the carpet should fit like OEM.

it does pretty much fit everywhere but it is a little loose and i cant leave it like that. The main place is the hump in the middle, there are a couple of bumps.

if you've got it positioned properly and you've already reinstalled your center console and seats, it can't possibly be that loose. Your center console and seat will hold it into place. However, if you've got the position mis-aligned slightly so that the shape of the carpet isn't properly matched to the shape of the floor, then you're going to have fitment problems no matter what you do. It's very important to get the carpet positioned properly before you start trimming.

When I put my new carpet in the Camaro a few months ago it was a little loose too. But I think it flattened itself out over time. Give it a while and see what happens.

help

i took the old original carpet out of my 92 rs.......... under the pedals at the front going up the firewall is a rubber coated mat..

the mat is soaked due to a leak...........i want to remove the mat and replace it but gm does not list the part and the gm service manual does not show it or how to remove it... it appears to be held in by clips and there are some brackets that are bolted over it............
do i just cut it out or what will happen if i start to undo bolts to remove it..............it seems to be one piece all the way across the car to the passenger side.................only the drivers side is wet...

can i replace it with a new part or use the dyna mat or brown bead u guys speak of..................

i already know how to remove the console and seats because i did that to remove the carpet........

can't find the leak on the drivers side either.........

Completely take apart your dash and find that leak first.

Cut out that old mat, its probably moldy. Just get it out of there anyway you can.

Use dyna-mat, i think it is better than the gm mat stuff.
