Candy apple red!
I got a question...I was told that candy apple red...the paint itself...was pretty expensive compared to other paints. Is this true? and if so, why....also....does anyone have pictures of a real nice deep candy apple red that doesn't look orangish in the sun? Thanks!

House of kolor. Red paint is always more expensive. A paint guy i know said something about it being more expensive to produce.. and Camaroguy18's car is a TRUE Kandy paint job.. something like 15 coats in all or something...

sorry for not getting to this sooner. Candy apple red is pretty expensive, but then again, all candy paints are when they are done in the true tri-stage fasion. The biggest misconception is that the candy (red in this case) is a paint....it's really more of a dye, and it's layered over a base coat (mine was high metallic gold)....and then followed by clear. Because you need to do steady, straight shots of the paint....there is a high chance for error/drips etc. If you mess up in any stage, you either live with the blemish, or you start over.....another reason why candy is so expensive (anywhere from 5-15k). For reference, my paintjob was around 8, and has about 10 coats on it total (including clear).
Painting more or less coats with the candy will alter the color, either bringing a lighter or darker shade to it, so thats why you can see 10 cars painted the same color, yet they differ in shade. Also, the base coat will alter the general hue of the candy....Ive attatched a pic of my car under Kandided91z's old ride (who used a base coat blend of gold/silver/and light blue IIRC)....just goes to show you how much it can differ. If you wanna see more, always check out my cardomain site

1989karr, what brand of paint were you talking about, anyway?... there is House of Kolor KANDY paint jobs, and Kandy apple red is one of the colors, but some companies make CANDY apple red... just a shade of red.... Like, my Fiance's mom has an '02 Grand Prix SE... paint code - candy apple red.. and there is no way that is a tristage Kandy paint job..
Camaroguy18, I was right on the HOK, right?
Kind of off topic, but i wonder if a shimrin black with a bunch of cobalt kandy blue would do anything interesting..

yep Im all HOK....and you're right candy apple red is a popular color name....they make a two-stage (base/clear) that looks pretty similar....but doesnt seem to have the same 'glow' effect.....kinda hard to explain if you've never see candy in person....if you'd like, I can get an exact price for you on what it cost me for the paint.
as for the shimrin black and cobalt....I'd be interested in seeing the outcome.....it would be a very dark blue...almost like a midnight blue you'd think.....its a shame the stuff gets pricey or I'd toy around all day with the stuff to find something unique

yah, if i had the money (and the time - school starts in a month) i would try it.. i've already got all the provisions for shimirin black... maybe someday
and yah, you should be able to use any basecoat you want to... Teal with cobal kandy would be kickass, IMO... as Camaroguy18 said, I wish i could just play around with a bunch of colors and combos...

I definatly wouldnt consider doing a true candy paintjob if your car sits through the weather.....as it stands with all paint fading in the elements...candy seems to really quick if not properly taken care of......here's one more pic thats in direct sunlight so you can see the red (you can also see some of the gold metallic shining through, which it does at some angles of light)....and one that best represents the 'glow' effect....the best way to see it (that Ive found) is under flourecent light (like at a gas station at night)....the color is incredible

I'm really not to sure of what paint to go with...but....I can decide because that won't be for a while
But thanks for all the info camaroguy! I like your car a lot! I'm looking for something like that if not darker. I love those shaved handles!
But if my understanding is right, if you were to start off with say a darker base color, then the overall appearance would be a much darker red right?

As for the question of why red is more expensive. from what i have heard. its because red has the most "pigment" in it. also silver is the same way, a lot of pigment. these two colors also fade the fastest, and candy is expensive, jsut cuz its candy, lol.
once agian, this is just what i have heard from one painter. so im not positive.
