Just had a crazy idea...rear seat lock box
I just had a crazy idea and was wondering if anyone else has done it...
So basically I never use my rear seats...I think they have been used maybe twice in the year that I've owned the car. So I had the brilliant idea of removing the rear seat and building a custom "lock box" in its place. Perfect for when I have expensive stuff in the car and my t-tops are off, or simply when I want to be able to throw random crap in the back without messing up my seats. Or maybe even throw a sub in there. It would be constructed out of wood, carpeted in the same gray carpet as the rest of the car has, and overall it would not be much higher than the current rear seat when folded down.
When you remove the rear seat, I assume there are some bolt holes or something to that effect for me to screw a custom lock box into, no?
Has anyone else ever done anything like this, and if so, can you post pics or info?
Thanks

There's a picture floating around here of a custom box to go in place of the rear seats. Same idea, except his is just a box to cover the wells and make it flat, where as yours would open. Looks pretty good IMO. Definatley an idea to try out.

I thought about doing something like this. I was going to use either wood or plexiglass. The reason for the plexi was to show off a computer built for the car. I just have not decided on what all is going in the car just yet.

YES! there is a bolt. if you pull up on the *** cushion of the seat (pull hard, it wont break) you can dee the bolt, big huge thing right into a bracket. should be enough to hold a box down.
i would recomend making it out of fiberglass or plastic for weight.
also, please take lots of pics and measurements. i have often thought about somthing like this. great minds think alike . i know others would follow in your footsteps if you make it easy.

i actually already had planns for something very simular, just didnt have locks. I wanted it to show off my sound system, and be able to hide as well. So I was thinking of making doors that can just flip open against the wall to show the amps. DVD & GM System under neithe, with video screen in the middle. Install 2-3 fans to keep cool, and would be set

Not sure how I'd cut and drill fiberglass or plastic...that's why I was thinking wood. So unless anyone has some ideas, I'll probably go with wood (a thin and lightweight kind)...
Rest assured if I do this, I'll take tons of pics

thin sheet metal could be cut with tin sheers. plus you could weald the joints. this would not be good if you are planning to use it as a sub enclosure. then you would want to use MDF board.
however, in a hatchback car, the hatch acts as a sound amplifier. making the well the best place to put a sub, i have a 30W 10 in my well (see "legend of bucketsub in my sig), sounds just as good as my brothers 500W 12 used to sound in our jeep charookie (it only had a 75W amp)
good luck
EDIT: if i ever make one i will make a half box, i have split rear seats so i would keep my rear passenger seat and only put the box in the rear drivers seat and middle section, then the guy in the back will have an armrest, i would also put a cupholder in it for him. just a few thoulgts.

I dunno about a storage box but right now i am having a custom Sub / amp enclosure made to house 4 12" MTX 9600 subs along with the appropriate amps and other equipment. I don't know why thye put the rear seat into our cars anyhow.. it is not like anyone could possibly sit in the seat.. maybe lay accross it, but never sit. at least if the people in the front seat are anywhere near 6ft tall

Ohhhh wow I like that idea.
I say go for it. I don't know about using wood though. I would use plexiglass or sheet metal if I were to take on something like that.

no wood in the construction of said box. it will all be fiberglass / carbon fiber for rigidness and such. I am not personally doing it, has been commissioned out to an actual pro lol.. I do not have the skills for such a task yet, as I am having the whole interior of my 83 camaro redone in Fiberglass and carbon fiber (depending on location).
This incudes but is not limited to : dash, center console, headliner, all plastic mouldings and trim, door panels, all rear panels (IE like the panels over the wheel wells and such) pannel on the hatch. sail panels.
I just got tired of the OEM stuff flakeing apart and i have developed cracks in the plastic facing of the dash at the corners (not the dashpad but the actual dash)
Figured while i was going to get all that done thi fall i might as well get my custom speak / amp box made at the same time. will be fashioned in the appearnace of a custom bench seat. and the bottom will be reinforced so i can set things on it if absolutely nessasary.
heh. heck. might make a very nice back massager with it. Not sure on the subs now due to the ones i was going to get a year ago are discontinued and the MTX 9500's have replaced them. Might just go with the MTX 8500's to save a little weight per speaker.

I'm all for weight savings but I'm a little confused...wood is easy to just buy, cut, nail together, and staple carpet to...how exactly would I make a box out of fiberglass or plastic? I'm no carpentry expert, so I imagine I'd be even worse with other materials...

basically you have a few more steps to the process. and a few different ways to go. You can make a mold for it, or you can build a lightweight box and then cover with said materials.. Best way to explain it is watch a show like "Unique whips" or the like.. ussually they make smaller ones for every car they do. the biggest thing is making the frame of the enclosuer as far as mine would be concerned. Since the reason we use MDF (right acronym?) board is because it is dense and does not offer any movement when there is pressure. so, you should be able to make a box or enclusure out of fiberglass / carbon fiber composite to do the same thing, and be a bit lighter. At least that is the theory. I have only ever made internal parts and brackets out of carbon fiber. and the first few times you will mess up until you do some reading on it and find out how to do things just right.
But on something of this scale. I am not sure exactly how he will go about doing it. Once it is done I will certainly take pictures of the inside and out and give a small write up of the process he used to build it ( as I am constant buggin him about how he did things lol)

RX7s have almost the exact rear area setup with locking storage bins, only the inside of boxes are fiberboard and carpet. Get a set of these and most of the work is done.

srdynamics1, thats what i stated in the other thread i posted before...but they dont fit that great, i tried a set of them out that came from a FB, didnt try the FC's or FD's because i couldnt get a cheap set, the best way to do this is just to buy from that EBAY guy, $80 bucks shipped is not all that bad, and they look pretty good too

Ahh didn't notice other thread.
The ones in the pic above are from an FC. I had a set in the back seat of my RS ( i was transporting them) and I don't see why they couldn't be made to work back there.
