No. Just no.

No to everything. If you paint your interior, do it with proper automotive paints, not shaker can krylon. It won't hold up. It will turn to goo in hot weather or with contact from skin (your skin's natural oils break it down). It doesn't matter how much you clean it either, vinyl doesn't really adhere very well, especially without scuffing it up first.

For a cleaning agent, for plastics I use DX103. It's an alcohol based pre-cleaner, that removes all static. Plastics are really good at building electrical charge, so use an alcohol based prep, even if it's just isopropyl at the bare minimum.

All shaker cans are gargage. Don't play around with that junk. Even if you clearcoat it, it will still flake and chip with the slightest touches. A lot of people will try to tell you different, but the truth is they just got lucky. If what you're painting will never be touched then you could get away with it, but if you're painting a console lid, or door lock cover, or radio bezel... Don't use rattle cans.

The reason shaker cans do not hold up is because they do not have any catalysts in them to harden them. Paint out of a rattle can is FAR different from paint out of a gun. The EPA prohibits isocyanates in shaker cans, and you have to have a proper ventilation system required by law. Anything without the isocyanate-based hardener will simply flake off, has a terrible adhesion, and will turn to a sticky goo with heat.

Also, if you paint it, don't ever put any petroleum-based products on it such as Black Magic or Armor All.





Safest bet would be to buy OEM plastics if you want to change colors, without painting them.

Token must have had a bad experience with painting interior plastics, gave up, and has convinced himself that it's not possible with a rattle can.

Duplicolor's vinyl and carpet dye in the rattle can works great. It isn't so much a coat of paint as much as it actually dyes the plastic. I did my GTA door panels this way, and I cleaned them up with just soap and water. My car gets just as hot as anyone's, and nobody could ever guess it was painted. It doesn't get sticky, tacky, or come off when it gets wet. I'm very satisfied with the result, as are many other people on TGO.

However, I agree with Token to an extent. I did not have a good experience with Krylon Fusion or Rustoleum's Paint for Plastic. They scratched/flaked off very easily, but this is not the case with the vinyl and fabric dye.

So, just soap and water will do.

I used the Dupli Color brand , and have had great luck. I'm glad i chose them in the first place, and saved myself alot of trouble. It holds up really well.


I used soap/water and then a scuff pad before i sprayed. I dyed my rear plastics to black.

I tested two types of Krylon Fusion, Gloss and Matte black and on one I wiped it out with soap and water and thhe other was something like denatured alcohol. They looked good but its been 4 weeks now or more and they still scratch very easily. I will test the vinyl paint tommorow, otherwise I will be spending about $120 on this interior paint made by duplicolor and will be using a spray gun.

We'll i did only 2 pieces with the kyrlon... so if everyone thinks the dupli color is that much better i could go with that.... Is there an easy way to completely strip the krylon?

Not devastating to switch.... its what, 4 bucks a can?

2.50 Or so. Dont get it from a automotive place... go to a walmart or fredMeyers. Cheaper.

Token is right! Don't use that junk from a spray can! If you're gonna do then do it right so it will last longer. Martin Senour Paints used to make a plastic primer available from NAPA (not sure if it's still available though). Gently clean the plastic with a good cleaner (Tec/Clean used to be available but lacquer thinner also works in moderation) and spray with the primer. Then lightly shoot your plastic with dye (Year One or Classic Industries sell it by the quart) from an air gun (touch up guns are the best or an air brush) with multiple coats before the previous one dries. Spray cans go on to thick and can cover up the plastic's texture or make it appear uneven. It works great but if you're changing color, no matter what you do, if you scratch the paint/dye then the base coat will still come through. Plastic primer isn't always necessary but it helps with the adhesion.

i agree with token.krylon's fusion doesn't hold up well at all,it scratches VERY easily and it just doesn't look right.but duplicolor's rattle cans are as bad as krylon's.same problem

Well the thing I dont understand is I tried two pieces, one I cleaned with denatured alcohol and the other paint thinner. I used satin and flat Fusion and it looks good but it scratches. I dont see how one persons will scratch and someone else wont.

i didnt use anything on mine..i only took a clean rag & wiped the dust & dirt off the pieces then i painted the pieces.i dont have any problems with the scratches cuz i dont haul people around in it & i take care of the plastics.im not sure how yall get scratches on the plastics though?

Well I'm just going to be getting my license so I will be hauling a lot of peoples and things around so I wasn't too cracked up about it. It certainly looked good but I was hoping it would get harder after a couple weeks but its been a couple months now and its pretty easy to scratch, not big scratches but noticable.

Anyways we are using this interior paint made by Dupont I think so we bought a quart and which ended up being enough to cover all the panels once. Now we are just waiting for it to dry but I can already tell its going to be better than the Krylon. The only problem is that I scuffed up some of the pieces too much and others had large slits it them which show through in places. Hopefully a second coat will do it.

I painted the black parts of my front parking lights and the fronts of the headlights bezels with krylon fusion (black) and looks like new.I have put many miles on my through all kinds of weather since I did that.And that being the front of the car.....it still looks like new.

when i painted my plastics i just wiped them off and painted. I used about 2-3 coats. I tired clear coat on one of the plastics but it looked nasty. Are you using clear coating?

The dyes or krlon fushion work well if you do not put your arms all over it and don't scratch it up. They eventually go bad, but what is $2.50-5.00 for a little touch up?

Why dont you guys go to the junkyard and pick out a peaice and paint it and stick that one inside your car for a while and see if you like it. it will be cheap.

I painted my radio faceplate black with Krylon (non-fusion) spray paint. Light sand before and then spray. It's lasted a year of heavy use and shows no signs of chipping at all. I also sprayed the center console including the lid, no chipping although the oils on my arm started to slowly fade the lid. I have to respray it about once a year.
