rust under gfxs

Hey guys,

I am about to start major body repair/repainting of my 88 camaro. I live in NY and for a car that is 17 years old, I want to say it is in relatively good shape and when I bought it, I only saw rust around fender lips, which I guess is to be expected.

Then as I disassembled the whole thing and took gfx's off, I discovered a whole bunch more areas of very questionable state. I am assuming this is common for these cars (especially the ones from rust belt). If you had it, how did you deal with it? Is there anything that can be done to make sure it doesn't happen again (and I want to keep the gfx's)?

Here's a link to the pictures I recently took of those areas. Any comments?

oh hey thats nothing compared to what i found under my GFX. Have you taken off the 1/4 panel GFX yet? If not, dont be shocked to find a bigger problem. I found a company that sells very good sheet metal for our cars in the exact form that your replacing.

Try grinding away at the rust you know you can handle, but if its too far gone try cutting it out and replacing it.

See this is what I want to here!! I've had so many people tell me I should drop the project car I've been working on for the last year and move on that it is not even funny.

And thanks for the website. This is exactly what I need. I should be able to replace the lower portions of both doors and quarters for a very reasonable price.

I was actually thinking of buying used doors, but I have a feeling shipping was going to kill me (I wouldn't buy them from any northern state)

Now two questions remain: why did it happen? What should I do to prevent it in the future?

Yeah i had to buy both sides for my 1/4 panels, THEY WORK GREAT! And are a great price. Cut out the bad parts, weld on the new sheet metal, and bondo over the welds and sand smooth.
