Who's been in an accident where your thirdgen got totalled?
Mine is being totalled, insurance has confirmed it.
My question is, how much is it normally to buy back a car?
I found this awesome 88 or 89 IROC(last year they made them is what it is) with no motor, tranny is ok, but i dont want it, paint is fine, but i must repaint it in certain areas(its black), and interior is ok, but not great, seats are torn, carpet is nice, smeels like mildew but nothing i cant fix. No body rust, and a hard top.
They sold the motor yesterday to a guy for $500, and the body is $559, i think i'll just take my tranny and put it into the iroc, and find a 350 to put in there and i'll be ok.
only thing i dopnt know is what they sell you back your car for, is it cheap?
Thanks,
Shane

I think it varies by insurance policy and by state vehicle registration laws. What applies to me won't apply to you.
I have a story sort of about that, but it isn't about a third-gen. It was my old '89 Grand Prix, primer paint job, but it had the whole bells and whistles tacked on it. In my stupidity, I tail-gated a Jeep Cherokee as she assed a car on the right shoulder. She stopped. Don't know why, just did. I rammed into her, trying to stop, but the brake design for the older W-bodies sucked. And they were expensive to fix. Rammed my nose into her bumper, bent up my hood, and susequently lost the ability to properly align the headlights. The lady thought it was her fault, I knew the car wasn't worth much, so neither of us called it in to anyone.
I took it to a shop that had fixed my wife's '96 GP, and they quoted me 1800 bucks JUST to change out the bumper and all the bumer-related stuff underneath. I called it a loss and sold it for a buck to a guy who thought he could fix it up.
So, it sounds like they just sold it to asome other guy, most likely a wrecking yard so they can part out the stuff like glass, seats and anything else of value on it. Friend of a friend ran a wrecking yard and was pissed if ANY car he brought in couldn't gross him 500 bucks. Most usually made him more then that.
I'd cut your losses and run with the money, basically. I read your other post about what happened, and it really is sad. Insurance can total some really stupid stuff, too. You got 1800 for it? Shop around, find a good car you can fix up, or better yet, one that doesn't need a lot of work. Considering you just had the tranny rebuilt, go ahead and rip that out, too. Might be useful to you later.

yeah i'm going to buy my car backl for the tranny and motor(that still runs strong) and just put it in the iroc that i'll buy and be happy. the iropc is nice just the black paint is very faded and all.
$2400 is what they said for the car so lets do the math
2400 payoff
400 estimate buy back
700 payoff tranny
559 iroc
200 repaint
=
$541 reamining, but i will fight until the end for more money then that.

I saw your other post shane and I'm going to have to say this bluntly... you're a dammed fool for letting an insurance company total your car for the minor amount of damage it had.
Book value at the time for my formula was a whopping $3900. With a damage estimate of $43xx... I nearly rolled some heads when I heard my car was going to be totaled and taken from me for something that wasn't my fault. After nearly killing some people & legal threats... I got $43xx + compensation for a rental I couldn't even get at the time and kept my car.
Never let some slapnut, p.o.s. insurance company tell you you have to have whatever they say you're going to get from them... the accident wasn't your fault... let them snake your silly *** and you'll be the fool losing out completely... even if it sounds like you're comming out ahead.
Just my opinion.... I have a slight amount of disdain for insurance companies though....

i've called attourney's but all of them tell me i am dealing with the mother of all insurance companies. AIG!!!!
they'll act interested in helping me until they hear AIG, AIG is the monopoly in the corporate insurance world, everyone ends up falling under AIG.
and their darn attourney's got big ***** as one attourney said. they dont want to enter something they know wont add a notch to their belt, simple as that.

Shane.. I have a hard time believing you do anything you say due to your past on the boards.
The company I went against was State Farm.. the biggest ***** I know of when it comes to insurance and,,don't quote me, I'm pretty sure they been around longer than AIG.
The accident isn't your fault.. the payout is merely pocket change to them but, that's not going to keep them from screwing you to the lowest dollar amount they can get by with. If it were legal for them to yank down your shorts and drill you straight in the a!!, take your car & call it a day, they would.
The last person they are interested in it you but, there's a saying,.. 'the squeeky wheels get the grease'. **** & moan enough and you'll get your way.. they'll pay you to shut up and get away from them.
Just because I don't like you doesn't keep me from feeling a little bad about your situation (if indeed it completely true).
If you have reciepts from paint, mods, whatever, this increases the value of the car as well. Sentimental value, hard to replace because it took you forever to find the exact car you wanted (then put said mods to it, time invested in said searching & mods....
There are pleanty of things to make a car worth more to you than what NADA quotes it to be.... if you like the car enough.. you can talk about it untill you drive the listener to the point of insantiy. Sanity has a price.... which comes in the form of a check to make you go away.
Or.. rollover, create more BS stories of why you're losing the car and forfeit it... it affects me none... mine's in the garage.
Again.. just opinion.....

The Farm also totaled my previously very clean car but there was only a bunch of hail damage (no glass broke). I ended up buying the car back for $1100. The adjuster did not like me or my car one bit, for no reason I might add.
He even had the nerve to imply that I stole my own stereo for the insurance $. Probably because there was no "Alpine stereo harness". I do my own wiring, thank you. Then he told me he used to be a repo man and third gens are one of the hardest cars to open and only serious pros can do it.
I swear for what I've paid on insurance on this car, they owe me a few new ones.
