'91 Z8 Steering wheel removal

I have a '91 Z28 and the leather has deteriorated at one spot on the the steering wheel and I have determined that it is too expensive to get it reupholstered from the posts on here and have heard that a GM wheel is like $600. I figure it would make more economical sense to buy and aftermarket steering wheel. I like the Grant Evolution GT Wheel part #1080

I haven't pulled off a steering wheel with an air bag before. What is involved in removal of it? I have read something about pulling the fuse for the air bag first. What else is involved?

Here's a step-by-step. One note though, you are going to need a special tool, a steering wheel puller. You can buy or rent one at any auto parts store. I know it seems like a lot, but it shouldn't take more than an hour to do:

First, disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the SIR fuse from the fusebox. Take the knee bolster off (the two plastic pieces under the steering column). They are held in by 5 torx screws. Then, look near the bottom of the steering column and find a large yellow wire. There are two yellow connectors that hold it together, disconnect them by removing the small green piece that holds them together and prying. Now your airbag is disabled. Now you can remove the airbag by unbolt the 4 torx bolts behind the steering wheel (the top left hand bolt is going to be tricky, FYI). Slowly take the airbag out to where you can see behind it and remove the yellow connector from the airbag and the horn button. Make sure to lay the airbag up while it's out of the car just in case it deploys. Then remove the nut that holds the steering wheel on and use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel.

Im having the worst trouble getting the bag back on my wheel...any trick to this? The 4 screws are all the way in, due to the little washers holding them in that far.....should I push them out more??

It's a pain, I know that. What I usually do is just put the airbag back on the steering wheel, but keep constant pressure on it, while attempting to thread the bolts in. If it's not fully seated in the steering wheel, it just doesn't want to bolt back in. If you can, than push the bolts out more.

One word of advice, don't tighten down the bolts one at a time, try and get them all started threaded in, and then tighten them down evenly.
