Anyone ever sandblast old paint?

I was thinking about sandblasting some areas of the car to keep it from rusting till I get it painted.Anyone ever sandblast the paint or use another kinda media to do it?I have used just regular playsand from Lowe's to blast my .45 caliber 1911 so I can parkerize it and it did good. However,It's different for a car.Any input on the idea?

sand blasting is the best way to remove rust, are you just taking old paint off the car or removing rust? If it's just removing old paint I'd leave it a lone till you can actually paint the whole car.

I got some surface rust on tne hatchback mainly.I want to nuke it before it gets worse.Maybe I can use just a DA orbital sander.

Your gonna want to sandblast any rust because a sander won't get into all the little divits the rust has caused, I've tried even a dremel with a pointy tip and it just makes more of a mess then I think it's worth.

You probably don't want to use sand; it can cause too much heat and warp the sheetmetal. Look into alternatives like walnut shells; it'll take the old paint off without generating too much heat.

You might also want to use a rust-eating/neutralizing chemical, too. http://www.por15.com is great for stopping rust, but not great for painting over. (You can paint over it but it needs some extra steps.) I'm sure if you did a search for "rust" on this forum, you'd find a ton of suggested chemicals.

http://www.eastwoodcompany.com (edit: under metal buffing and finishing on the left) is one joint that sells different sandblasting media; not sure about any other online places- anyone?

Well..I could try to use either aluminum oxide or glass beads.Maybe I might try the plastic media which might be a little more easier on the metal.

I never had a problem with the sand blaster warping cause i dont use it on flat panels best to use a DA for that. Somethin to watch out for though is the between panels the sand can get up in there and remove paint and you have to make sure it gets sealed back up or the rust will return fast. Ive done that on wheel well lips before where there are alot of gaps between the panels and i guess the paint didnt get up there to well and the rust came back worse. It always seems like somethin sand blasted will rust alot fast then some bare metal not sandblasted just get it painted quick after.
