providing that its good paint and materials thats a pretty good deal. when i got the paint for my car it was 300 for base 300 for clear and i got all the solvents and everything for free from work. red is the most expensive color so what you got quoated at was pretty good. good names to look for are like RM, DuPont, House of Kolor, you kno the known names not the **** macco uses.

Was the clear DuPont nason? If it was I would spent a few more bucks and get there better line of clear. The nason is not bad but did not buff out real good for. And the stuff is super thin.

I got local quotes of $560 and $514 per gallon for sunset orange metallic. If I want to go with platinum it was $250 a gallon.

if you want a really cheap clear that looks good. use U-POL clear. its like $70 for a gallon of clear, reducer, and hardener. i also agree with what was said about the nason line of clears. they aren't worth the money. my choice of clear is ppg 2021 concepts clear. it really durable, but you can look to spent about $300 for a setup.

How good your paintjob looks and lasts depends a lot upon the materials you use, and the effort you put into it, someone with a "i dont care how it looks i just want it to stick" probably isnt going to end up with much for a lasting paintjob....

So far i've used napa's econo line, the clear was not the greatest but worked ok, the basecoat had so so coverage, used the 92 gm bright red, definetly used the full gallon on the car.

PPG Omni, coverage is about like napa econo, like the clear a bit better.

PPG Global, coverage is great, clear is really awesome, however the price might scare most DIY'ers

HOK Shimrin Black base and UFC35 clear, basecoat sprayed nice, clear works quite nice also, price is very good.

One of the best things you can do is prep very good, and use sealer close to the color you are painting.

$560 for just a gallon of paint or is that for the whole setup? Who makes Sunset Orange anyway?

I just bought Dupont chroma base and clear. And sealer. I get my paint at body shop prices. It was 523.00 (gallons of each one). Found a new paint called Matrix System . Asked about it on auto body store.com. Alot of people said that there clear is realy good and there base is good but sometomes trouble matching. But if u are paint the hole car don't matter. U can get the base and clear and all the redusers for like 300.00 bucks. Going to be paint xpndbl3 car with it. I will let u all know how it works out.

$520 was exactly what I was quoted for those materials, the color being Red Hot by Dupont. I knew the guy so I got it for $350 though, .

Wow, I didn't know paint costs that much. I just had my friend paint my car a month or so ago Torch Red. It was a base/clear style paint.

The one thing not to skimp on is the clear. the clear is the only protection your paint has from the damaging sun rays. Buy the very best clear you can afford and back off on the paint.

Physically pick up a can of the best clear and a can of lesser expensive clear. You can feel a difference. Why? Higher solids content in the top of the line clear which will let you sand and buff more while still providing the UV protection.

***Less expensive= more solvents***

I have been using PPG Deltron products. So far, the paint sprays very nice.

Color $250/gal
reducer $40/ gal
1/2 gal Clear and hardener $120

my brother works for PPG, so I got a little discount, but those prices are about what they retail for.

cheap

Guys I am not sure what happened but I just picked up a can of Dupont Sunset orange metallic (medium) for $150 a gallon. it came to $200 with the reducer and avtivator but thats still a lot cheaper than what you guys have been quoted. I was pertty happy when he told me the price(it was at my local auto-part store) they deal in PPG and Dupont. If I were you I would do some more searching/shopping, I think you can get it a lot cheaper.

Oh yeah I can also get Dupont 2part expoxy (1gal $70+tax) and clear (1gal $80+tax)

Loco--
You may have bought for that price, but what line is it? My price was for the PPG Deltron line, which is closer to the top. The price is also dependant upon the color is. Blue and green metallics seem to cost more. It has something to do with the bases they use to make it.

But if you got a top product from Dupont for that price, great deal!

???

Red is the most expensive color right now...followed by yellows (like chrome yellow); excluding of course HOK and the Ghost Chrome's. The cheapest costing colors I paint are usually the darker ones (blues, greens, black). $520 for paint is not a bad price. Ive dished out as much as $1200 for red (tri-coat red used on mustangs in late 90's).

Where I bought mine, they had three different price levels. The blue and greens were in upper of the price schedule. I don't know why, just going by when I bought mine. Maybe they hosed me.
