Anybody tried to setup there SS hood for cold air to the tb?

I would like to get mine to pull cold air from the scoop into the TB like the 4thgen cars. Maybe even use a stock 4thgen ss box to do it.

I would be interested in how you would do this. I just put a cone filter on my TB and my hood is cut open. when the hood closes the filter is right there. it does make a diff. because I ran my car with the hood blocked off and then open and my g-tech said a few hundreths faster.

Yeah I did the same thing...when the hood is closed you can see the filter. The opening is just in front of the tb. I can see the boot when the stock duct work is on. The TB felt cool to the touch after installing the hood. It really does help drop under hood temps down. I had the cone filter lying around and thought i would give it a try. Thats why i want to build a box of some kind to keep the rain out. shame wasting all that cold air.

The 4thgen cars have that box that runs around and on top of the plenum. Something like that would work.

This is a shot with the grill removed. My hood has three holes of this size across the opening. Can open it more if need be.

It could rest over the plenum like the 4thgen airbox.

the 4th gen hoods have that passage in them though, the air doesn't come right in to the air box from outside, it goes up inside the hood and then down on the filter. I assume this is to keep water out. I cut my hood open the same size as the opening, I just left a lip to keep water from going up the hood and in. I have driven it in the rain many of times and the filter wasn't wet after 45 mins on the high way. maybe I just got lucky. though now my car only goes out on nice days

Right i found one online that showed the underside. There is a nice cutout under the hood to mount some type of fiberglass air box like that. Where you still get some ramair effect as well as cold air.

I talked to Rex..at ASCD...he said he has a idea for a box. Just has to find the time to do it. So maybe sometime in the future.

Yeah I wish I had one to play with, to see if i could make it work. Hate to spend the money on it, and not be able to use it. If i run across, a used one for a good price. IM not giving up my STB, so it would have to snake around under it. Looking at the 4thgen setup, it probably would. If that would work, and it would set on top of the plenum, like the 4th gen. I could build an insulated box out of fiberglass.

The cone filters not a bad idea, if you could just seal it in a box, away from the motor heat. It pulls cold air from the hole in the scoop. But draws hot air from the bottum of the filter, at the manifold. The air coming in should be pretty cool still, when your moving.

Guess no one has come up with anything yet.

i fabbed up one using the 96 SS air box. i friend of mine super charged his SS and it cant use the box.. the problem you are going to run into in the Radiator hose is in the way, also you will need the 4th gen elbow.. it might be better to get the one trick flow sells.

i dont have a digital camera right now, nor do i have the SS hood, yet, but this was a project i was working on for some time. the air box will have to be cut and the tube comming from it reglued in a different position to make this work, as it sits angled on the 4th gen. needs to sit flat as it can in a TPI. but if some one had an LT1 intake.. it would be fine. but the major issue is the radiator hose, which i have not worked out yet. when i finish it i will get pictures and such.

How do you all keep your hoods down? I have a ss hood and I don't want to use hood pins. My hood doesnt seem to like to sit down completely. I still have to install the hood spring.
Did you guys put the hood spring from your old hood on the new one? If so, how did you do that? Is there only one hood spring in the middle?

Yeah, there is only one spring in the middle....mine sits down fine and latches fine. Sounds like you've got some problems....any pictures?

I actually haven't put the spring on yet, so maybe it'll be different then. How did you get the spring in the hood? Too cold to do anything up here in the winter =[ my hoods in the basement right now, i finished cutting some holes in the front, just have to put the grill on and the spring.

It looks like I am going to have to use hood pins becasue the locking bar is not centered.
also did any of you guys with the SS hood have a lot of dimples and bumps on the sides of the hood, right next to the fender? thanks.

I did have some small bumps, and good size one at the front of the hood. you can see it in the picture on my cardomain site. I think this is typical of fiberglass body parts. I havent done anything with them yet gonna let the paint and body guy do it.

About the locking bar arent those threaded inserts just pop riveted in? Maybe you could move it over and poprivet it in the new location. Not quiet that easy im sure.

I think I have found a solution. Yesterday while I was cutting up and mounting a billet grill I bought to put on the front of my ss hood, I had an idea. Off I went to the local Home Depot, and low and behold I believe I have found the greater half of what I need to make a custom air box...

It will require a bit of cutting and a couple additional item to make it work. By cutting off one of the pipes existing on the side I should probably be able to get a K&N cone filter into the main housing. Then I would cut part of the top off and use some means to channel in all of the air from the SS opening in the hood. The other pipe existing on the side would then be connected to the stock TPI "Y" airbox and the two filters in this airbox removed. I've test fit it and I don't believe the belt will get in the way at all. If this works (I'm about 85% sure I can get it to)I will not only be able to use a ram air system by means of my foglights but by means of the SS Hood scoop as well!!

Still not 100% sure if it will fit, but the plan is right in front of the throttle body and just above of the drivebelt.
