Cancerous Rust.. Damn You!!
well, tonight has officially become the worst. I was planning on sanding down most of the car by morning (im a night owl) and start prepping her with some Evercoat RAGE body filler... to fix some minimal dings and a little bit of rust..
WELL, I attacked a rust spot on the passenger QP.. looked and felt like surface rust (had a body guy look at it about two months ago). After about two minutes of sanding I found... ITS RUSTED THROUGH!!! *** NO!!
Soo... i have a few questions.. Will a complete newbie like me even be able to think about tackling repairing the rust damage OR should i just take it to the body guy in the morning and ask him for a quote just to fix the problem areas? I am on a very limited budget (meh, like $150-200 every two weeks free of bills) so i would definately want to be able to fix or replace this myself... Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
I will post pics in the morning when i get a hold of a camera..
Thanx

well, either find someone whos good with a welder, or practice before you try it.
the only way to fix the rust is to cut it out and weld in new section from a junkyard car

if you're going to sand it all down to bare metal anyways, you might as well go to a junkyard and grab a non-cancerous quarter panel and slap that one in place of mr. terminal.

really? well, i just didnt wanna try to bondo it and it crack off and fall after i put a new paint job on it..
I got the piece, i'll post a pic in a little bit.. Cost me $30 at a junkyard ($25 for the metal and $5 to have them cut it out) and its a pretty big piece
I know it doesn't seem like its very big, but, the lip where the inner fender and the quarter are welded together is rusted out too.. so there wouldn't be much to bondo to, i wouldn't think... i dunno.. i guess this option at the body shop isnt too bad of a way to go

I had the same kind of problem but on my rear inner fender. I used a sawzall and cut a good panel out of a scrap car and welded it in my car in the spring. It was alot of work but turned out really good. I would be a bit more leary of doing it out a quarter panel though because I dont know if I could do a good enough job for my liking

Yah.. if it was inner fender.. i would do that myself.. cause i wouldnt be too concerned if it looked perfect or not.. but i have seen a lot of these guys' work and they are damn good at what they do. Also, since i know the onwer, he's gonna do it himself for me so i KNOW it will get done good.. i am very relieved that i dont have to end up spending $500+ to get this fixed.
