Door hinge Question

Door hinge Question

Ok, I hope this doesn't sound too stupid.....but how can I tell which hinge on my door needs replacing???? The door is only sagging a bit.....but when you open and close the door you can feel it sagging?? I dont want to have to buy a upper and lower kit if I dont have too.....thanks Kim

To tell:

When the door is open, if you can take the back of the door (near the handle), and move the door up and down, the hinges need replacing.

Also, if the door take force to shut, thats probably a good sign. That usually means its not hitting the striker dead on.

ok?

ok....the door closes pretty easy...but I can move it up and down just a little...how do I know what hinge needs to be replaced???

What I did was sit in the drivers/passanger seat looking at your door hinges, and lift up on the door, if its sagging then it will move up and down. You'll see the hinge/bushings move around. Most its just their lower hinge pin / bushings that go out. But you might not be so lucky.

Door hinges

Its been my experience that while you are there you might just want to replace both. If one has gone bad the other one is not short to follow and unless you enjoy tearing things down twice for the same job I would replace both. If you buy them in a kit I am sure it would save you money to buy each separately as well.

Also, look at your Ground FX or whatever is right under the door. Look for scratching where the door rests. On my car the door sag wasnt bad, but I could tell it was because there was scratches on my GFX where the door would rub as I was shutting it. It wasnt relly bad that I could hear it or feel it, but over time I could see the scratches.

Don't waste your time to do just one. If your going to take the door off, you might as well do them both. You wouldn't pull the oil pan to do just one rod bearing, would you???

it is 100x easier to do with the door on the car and the front fender off. may not ba an option for you but that is how i did mine.
