Teardown of an '87 IROC-Z28...
I am in the process of tearing down my '87 IROC for a complete resto-mod project. Starting off this project is the teardown (obviously)...
I've got some pics to share. Tell me what you think.
As for the car's future: Paint will be a copper/orange/metallic color... interior will be all black with 2000+ Ebony Camaro interior... Exterior will be Cervini cowl hood, 91-92 Z28 wing, 17" SS gunmetal wheels.... Engine... haven't completely decided...
Anyway, check these pics out. One thing that has really surprised me thusfar is the complete lack of rust! This car was given some abuse from previous owners; Evident in the condition of the car's wiring and lack of maintenance... the interior was shot as well. I figured for sure that it had to have some rust or hidden damage somewhere, but I have yet to find anything really substantial.

Wow thats a pretty clean shell to work off of. Main thing is there's no rust. From the sounds of your build up specs it should be a pretty mean ride... gotta love the SS rims, I havent really seen them on a third gen before. I probably have to do a search or something... im too lazy.
In anycase good luck, and keep us updated. Id definately like to follow your progress.

Keep us updated on your progress in this thread. Everyone likes to see a project from start to finish. This should be another nice thread to check up on like Jeffw's.
Good luck on the transformation!

Mine will be a while before its even considered done. I did get lucky on the shell though, no rust.
I am still a bit unsure as to what comes next, but I believe after I completely remove all of the interior (wires, jute, debris, dash), I'll turn again to the engine bay. Is there any easy way to remove the wiring harness for use later? Mine is pretty beat up but it can be repaired.
I was originally going to tear down the entire car and start from a completely bare shell but I believe I'm going to do like f1ls1 did here: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=262282
... and leave the suspension on. I want the inside, outside, and engine bay to be painted the orange/copper color and then I will probably spray the underside of the car black (unless someone has a better idea to share). Before the paint though, the roll cage will go in (or later, which ever is easier). Roll cage and SFC's; I like the sound of that.
Anyway, once its painted, it will still be awhile before I can put an engine in (or in this case, HAVE the engine put in; I don't have enough finesse not to scratch the brand new paint when installing the engine). Anyway, then I'll install the black interior... New carpet, door panels, hopefully I can find a complete, decent 82-87 black interior. The last thing to go in will be the engine/tranny.
I'll keep you updated.

the interior shell looks really good Dante, when I switched from doeskin to black interior in my 87, i only had one small patch of surface rust, right under the right rear passenger seat. Other than that, it was perfect. Even the same color as yours, looks familar.
you just barely have me beat on rust control

Thanks for the words of encouragement, guys...
I did a small amount of work today as well. Started taking the dash out, got sick of the ratchet hitting the windshield so I took it out... the windshield that is More of a pain than anything else so far on the car. LOL... Got it out by myself with no bleeding
Here are some more pics:
Anyone need to buy a dash?
[edit] Looks like my site is down temporarily so I've gotta upload them. I'll keep it to the 3 limit. [edit]

You're all probably getting bored with the dash/interior shots, but for those that aren't, here goes:

Thats going to cause a problem, I'm sure. How did you gut yours? I've never actually messed with power locks/windows nor have I removed the glass in a door before.

Just drill out the rivets and remove everything. Take pictures if you are not sure how to put it back together.
Do you have a factory service manual? It tells you how to put it together. You could also buy a assembly manual for it I've seen them on ebay for $20.00

The edge that's destroyed is only that way because I tried to fit this thing into a garbage can. Wasn't gonna happen... I threw it in the truck and have now gotta take it to a dumpster.

I did a little more work today. Finally got the dash entirely out.
The wiring isn't really as bad as I thought. I was really expecting it to be a lot more disorganized than it really was. I can't wait to get this thing painted and get the 2000+ dash in there!
I also took the heater core out once I had the dash out. I can't even imagine doing this job with the dash in. Good thing I'm going to be replacing it anyway. A LOT easier with everything out. When I drained it, I was amazed to see just how much corrosion there was in the stupid thing. The fluid pouring out was brown!
Anyway, here are the pics. Hopefully the load. My webhosting service has been have serious problems lately.

wow looks like your exactly where i'm at except i dropped the k-member and everything attached. but i got my koni sway bars ready to go in and my 4th gen rear is in.
I've replaced 2 heater cores one in mine and one in a friends. I hate it! Your supposed to remove the dash to replace it anyway but no one ever does, they just unbolt the passenger side and pull it out to get it out, which is why everyone complains about it being a pain.
Just a quick question... How did you get the window out? I've never tried it and mine is already cracked (buddy dropped the hood on it it was winter and only means on transportation cracked beyond belief) I heard junkyards used hood release cables??? some use piano wire?

Actually I did it a little different. I took a pair of pliers and grabbed part of the weatherstripping around it and started pulling. Some didn't separate so I had to use a screw driver and a hammer, basically acting like a chisel to remove some of the stripping.
It was a royal pain but I hadn't ever done it before and didn't know if there was an easier way or not. It took me about 30 minutes. Overall though I guess, it wasn't that hard, just something I hadn't done before.

I do need a bigger garage. In a year or two when my wife and I move to Tennessee, we're going to get a nice house with enough land to build a shop someday.
Although, for being 21 and 22, we can't complain about our house/garage for now... and to think, we had considered a one car garage when we were house shopping

More progress
My wife and I both have been working for about 2.5 hours today on the car. The work is slow, but steady.
So far today my wife has removed all of the GFX parts and the rear bumper.
I, on the other hand, have only removed the front end. About 99% of every bolt I touched today was rusted solid.
ANYWAY, here are some pics.
Next, after a bite to eat, we're going to remove the fenders:
I've never seen a 3rdgen w/o the front cover before but it looks like its been hit according to the shape of the pass side bumper mount.

More
Here are some as it will sit for the night.
The picture below is of the door hinges and my main question is, how does the door's wiring disconnect from the car? I am looking to remove the door and want to make sure not to damage any wiring.
Below is the family's new Avalanche. Its an '04 model. The color is _NOT_ Sunset Orange Metallic. Its something new. I believe its a one year only GM orange/copper. Its called "Sunburst Orange Metallic " and it is the color I'm going to paint my IROC-Z. I will add a little more metallic to it, but you get the idea. The pictures don't do this color justice, its a REALLY nice orange/copper color. Doesn't turn red in overcast skies like the SOM does.

Pardon me for being rude...but...
What the hell do two people of 21 and 22 years of age do for a living that can afford a nice house with a 2 car garage with 2 Third Gens, a new Chevrolet full size truck, and a 2004 Avalanche? Jesus...Aren't you supposed to still be in college?
