flying cigarette lighters

I remember my friends camaro had this problem. Push the cigarette lighter in to heat up and after it heated up it shot out like a rocket landing anywhere. That's not the best thing to have happen driving down the road.

So are these known to have that problem or did the lighter just need to be replaced?

Had the same thing happen to me. It's an easy fix, assuming it has the correct lighter element. The lighter socket has a couple of small tabs in the side wall that are supposed to "catch" the lighter when it pops out. Pull the lighter out, look into the socket to see the tabs. Just bend those out a little with a small flat head screwdriver. Be careful not to touch the hot wire at the bottom of the socket with your screwdriver or you'll smoke your fuse.

Or do it the smart way and remove the fuse first.

Actually, the tabs I described are near the outer end of the socket so you shouldn't even have the screwdriver close to the positive terminal of the lighter recepticle. If you're worried about making contact with the 'hot' end of the socket and don't want to remove the fuse, simply use an electrically non-conductive implement instead of a screwdriver.

Hah, cool, Rob, I never would've thought of that. I would've just used a tiny screwdriver.

My cig lighter did that (when it worked; I miss it)... I always thought it was kinda cool tho. Then again, I have a Firebird, so it would just pop straight up into the air- not like a Camaro where it would shoot out at the driver!
