Front Bumper Repair

Just took the nose off my 86 TA.
What is the grey "honeycomb" stuff that was all mushe up in there?
Is that the origin of todays (sytrofoam insert) and can it be re-molded or reused at all (with heat or something)?

The honeycombed item is the Impact Asorber. If its damaged in any way, it needs to be replaced. You can get a new one for about $130 US. They cannot be repaired.

Instead of a NEW "honeycomb" impact absorber, could you not just fill the cavity with expanding foam spray insulation? I mean, how much worse could it be than the white styrofoam that I've seen in newer cars? Seems like it would basically serve the same purpose, and be lightweight as well.

I would put the old honeycomb pieces back in, and basically fill it and all the cavities with the spray to make it stick, and become pretty solid.
Any comments or thoughts on this idea?

Are you kidding?
Insulation is not a replacement for a Impact Asorber.
Key words = Impact = getting hit & Asorber = asorbing the impact.
For safety replace it. Or use insulation & thin out the herd.

I've done a bit more detective work on the front end. I couldn't figure out why the honeycomb was so messed up from one end to the other, since the damage was only on the passenger side front corner. Looks like the drivers side had repair once too. I believe that when the drivers side damage occured, they honeycomb was NOT replaced, then, when the pass. side impact occured, the impact absorber became the mush that it now is.
Does anyone know off-hand if an impact absorber from a Camaro would work, or because of the different bumper shell would be different?
