"Started" my door panels

I traced the stock cardboard door panel on to some 1/4" hardboard. I am going to eventually cut them out and cover them with vinyl (black). I want to cut out the firechicken on the scrap pieces of hardboard and overlay it on the panel, so when I cover it there will be a 3D look and feel. I need that special stupid tool to remove the plastic trim pieces from the existing panel, which is like $8 at AutoZone, right? But I have a can of 3M 90 adhesive, which was as high as I could find anywhere around here.

Anyone have any experience with what I am about to do? I am looking for suggestions and ideas. I'll be using black vinyl, and potentially a secondary color like gray, white, or blue. I'm no good with a sewing machine but I know people who are, so they can stitch some things together for me if I want. I am gonna put a foam behind the vinyl, and I think I might try putting some carpet on there. If I were still into car audio, now would be a kickass time to put some pods in the door...

Take your time. I redid my door panels with black vinyl and they came out looking great. I wanted to try and put "Camaro" in raised letters so you could feel it and it would look more custom. My wife talked me into just making it plain for now because i had never done it before. I sewed mine by hand and it takes forever, very hard to find the existing holes. Anyway good luck with it.
