Transmission: 5-speed
Axle/Gears: 3.73 10-bolt
Quick painting questiong
i have a 86 TA and i was wondering if i should paint paint the car together, or if i should take the body kit off and hood and fenders and paint them separtly

I'll reply, if for no other reason than my frustration at wading through hours of threads due to my inept search criteria
I would remove all body panels (fenders, doors, hood, ground effects, hatch, bumper covers, maybe more) and paint them separately. What for? This would ensure (for me, anyway) that any edges and seams get direct coverage instead of just overspray. Painting pieces separately just seems like a cleaner and more professional job as far as I'm concerned.

that advice is just fine depending on type of paint if you are using metalic, pearl or candy paints you can not paint with the panels off or it will look wrong all the panles will not match.....so if your painting a solid color you will be ok. do the search you will find the same info.....

it is so much time to invest in a paint job hate to see someone take the wrong steps i know i am super carefull with every step. if i was doing solid color i would do apart it is easy to spray a small part.
oh and if you changing color you have to take apart and jamb first and then if metalics ect you have to reassemble to paint panels. it is alot of fun though........

let me do the favor... since it is probably very relevant on this thread... pearl paint is made of countless pearl particules in the paint.. those particules are multifaced which brings out the "depth" in the paint... using a different pression, or applying them differently on two panels will result in the "depth" effect not matching up since the particules won't be aligned properly... so Jeff's blue candy would look darker on one panel and lighter on the next if paint seperatly... not that it is impossible to do, but... don't risk it and do it all at once
if you want to be sure, paint the seams first and then bolt on the pieces so you can paint the whole car and have the seams well painted as well

and one more thing if u have the room to do everything off the car.I put my bumpers on the (but left a gap) when i painted it so it would all match.

well i was planing on painting the the body kit a dark gray, and the body laser red metallic. I don't have the skills to paint, so my freind who is in auto body is going to paint it and he is telling me to talk everything off, and i'm affarid that the bumpers, that are taken off the car, are not going to match the rest. I thought that it should be painted as one, thanks for all the replys and tips

metallic is less tricky than a three coated pearl paint... even if they are apart from the body he will probably paint them at the same time... so he will be using the same pression... there are less variantes (sp?) in a normal 2K metalic paint than a 3K pearl paint... very doable the way he wants to do it.. no worries

Does he mean the locks,handls,spoiler,lights,ect ect...Also I know the when we paint bumbers at were i work they do paint them off the car. The painter at my shop knows what he is doing. I put mine back on cuz I'm not that great at painting.

The fear is, not really will it match, (but very valid, as even something as simple as humidity can change a metallic color), but that, who is assembling the car?
The chances for nicks, chips and scratches are far greater if the car is dis-assembled completely.
Now and again, If we know the vehicle, and we know we are panel painting the vehicle, the painter will hang the panel in the booth and spray both sides, and clear both sides. then it's up to the body guy to make sure nothing happens during assembly. (everybody involved knows all of this ahead of time, and if the body guy balks, or is worried, we go old school, and edge it, hang it, then spray it.)

Take everything off, you cant do a proper paintjob with everything on, however dont try to spray the parts different days, or just 1 part then let it dry and do another. Spray it all at once, however apart.
