Project Resurection Part 5

so here is my work today, have not posted all week due to being back in work, would much rather have been on vaction still but gotta pay for this stuff somehow.

so today i sanded the car somemore blocking and final skimming of little dents and such. I have a little more left on the drivers door and the rear bumper to sand out. Then it will be on to the last primre coats and wet sanding. First i have to install some new lights in the garage, can't see well enought to paint in there. So it will be a trip to the depot tomorrow.

Today i finished the prep on the gfx so i sanded painted and clear coated them. i did it outside since the garage was to messy to paint in, and i didn;t feel like cleaning it since i was still sanding. so here is a couple pics of painted gfx and cleared with 2 coats. next will be wet sand with 400 and 3 more coats of clear.

enjoy maybe more tomorrow if not see ya next weekend.

clear is not perfect neither is my prep but for the gfx and outdoor painting it is workable, that body prep is 100% on the money...

last pic this is of the door repair on the passenger side, i used two fillers both are evercoat, z grip and metal glaze or something like that. its a spotting putty i got it is nice to work in the real small spot like holes and minor imperfections. i used it as a final coat to insure complete straightness with the guide coat.

thanks i am pleased, but i would not reccomend painting outdoors, not the best appliction and got a couple of bugs and dirt in the clear but it will wet sand out the flo coats will be done indoors,

installed 5 four foot flourescent fixtures today in my garage. so next weekend i will be priming the car again and wet sanding it for final prep before shooting the paint. that should be the following weekend if all goes as planned.

flo coat is a drippy clear coat,,,,,

what you do is put 2-3 coats of clear on and wait till it sets in my case 24 hours and then wet sand with 1000g or 1200g to smooth it all out and then over reduce the clear and shoot 3 more coats.

over reduce, my clear mixes 2:1:1 so for flow coat it is 2:1:1.5
i belive is what it said.

so what you have is a super smooth surface, with a thin clear that runs or flos out real smooth. then you buff till you have the deepest shine you ever seen. This is what gets expensive when going for a show car paint job at a body shop. but since i am doing it no problem only time.

so this weekend as most i will update on my progress, tonight i finsihed all my sanding and spotting, cleaned the car with post sanding cleaner twice. hung my front gfx from the ceiling for primering. tomorrow i will put 3 coats with primer. and then wet sand the entire car. then we will be looking to add some color. depending on how tomorrow goes i may be doing color on sunday. but expect it will be next weekend for sure. since it is about 12 coats i will not be rushing to start it everything has to be perfect before i will spray those last steps. i will be doing my jams this weekend for sure and playing with my hok kk candy with the clear to get a feel for the over laps and such. i have an old hood that will get the treatment over primer without any real prep other than a quick sand and cleaning. I;ll post pics tomorrow if any thing to show. i will post on part 6

Hey Jeff,
Been searching for your progress, looks fantastic from the pics...
Yeah, anything out doors can be a bitch... Summer time is kind of a drag with all the bugs and s**t...
When you seal and get the first couple of coats of base on... Look it over real good, let it dry and you can de-nib the base with a piece of 800 grit, the stuff's real user-friendly, tack off your dust, blow a couple more light coats of your ground color before the candy, and you're golden.
How'd the gfx turn out for sand scratches? My concern would be that 400g is a bit too coarse for between clear coats. It would dig pretty hard, and the chances for going through into your color are higher...
Maybe switch to 1000 or 1200, let the paper do the work for you.

so you think i should sand the base? it is metalic hok. there t sheets say no, but i would trust your judgment you haven't steared me wrong yet.

i did not wet sand the gfx yet. had to work all week and ran outta time last weekend. i may have confused the grits. 400g wet for primer right. good think i had no time. does sanding wet with 1000 or 1200 give it enough to reshoot more clear or will i have adhesion problmes?

as you can see it looks like previous pics, but today i 2k primered 3 coats on the car, last night i prepped for primer by finishing sand the t top seal area, post sanding cleaner on the car twice. and did another post sanding clean this morning before primer and tack ragged this time.

last pic, no matter how hard you go over and over stuff little things can be missed see the door ding? damn

well maybe you can't but there is one i seen it when i bent down to take this pic. I can fix it so no biggy.

so my next step other than fix the ding, is wet sand the entire car and then i will be ready to paint the base.

first i need an protable garage to set up a better booth. no matter how well i seal every thing i still get the smell in the house. so the next steps will be in a portable garage set up as a booth. I can always use the garage after anyway for my boat.

thanks i appreciate it. it is a long process but since its not my daily i have that luxury. as for the cost if you need a paint job this is cheaper, and the satisfaction is imensly worth it. i enjoy looking at the pics of where it was when i started to now and just say damn i did alot and did it right. I have read everything i can find watched some videos monitor multiple boards...that is where i have learned what i have done. it just takes patinets and knowing when you ready or not. Hardest part is to not rush anything sometimes you think it is ready even when you know you could just tweak this spot or that and then it shows in the final product. Oh and you have to know when to ask the right questions

portable garage just gotta find one and i'll be golden.

Have you thought about making one? If you get a bunch of PVC (unsure of name to be honest) pipe, some 90 degree elbows, a bunch of clear tarp, and a fan, you can build one.

Basically the PVC pipe is your frame, and you make it into a big cube or rectangle using the elbows, and then if you put the clear tarp around each side (you can put the tarp on the bottom of the 'custom paint booth' in order to keep from all that garage debris from coming up and getting into your paint... cleaner air). As well as the top so that the paint doesnt seep into your house

I'll do a search where I found this info and link it to yah... it's really relatively inexpensive considering you can just collapse it and put it in a corner until you need to use it again (re-usable paint booth.. OoOoO )

yep was kinda thinking that.. but i also found a portable garage all the pvc and a roof, all i would have to add is plastic sides. i have fans and such. most run around 130-150 for 10x20 but i need a bit wider, maybe i can add longer pvc pipe to make it wider. I did find a two car that would be super it is almost 300.00. but i think i may spend close to those prices on supplies to make it from scratch.

i've been wanting to build a detached garage for so long.. 3 bay bigole maybe it is time. i want a lift, guy at work has a 2 car with loft and lift and big beam for pulling engines all set up. Very sweet. and with my conextions from work ( facility engineer) i would set this thing up pretty reasonably a/c heat electric the full auto garage wish list complete. but still look like a home garage on the outside.

JeffW- If you use plastic and a Good Fan you can prevent the smell from the house. I painted a Chevy Truck for a friend and a family member couldnt handle the smell when we primed it. So we built a temporary booth and had no problems with smell. It worked better then the paint booth I had at work. We didnt get any dust in it and it was a black truck.Just FYI

right now i used my garage. it is an under house garage. i taped up all opening with duct tape and had a huge filter unit running outside the garage and blowing air in through a window the garage door was open 2 feet with filters in it at the top and bottom so 4 foot of exhauts area. the garage never got real foggy with the fan running but the smell got into the two above rooms still. i have tried all diffrent approaches to keeping the house sealed but nothing has worked. so it is outside with a home made booth i go. i am thinking the leak is near the door that is allowing the fog into the basement and rooms above. there is a steal beam over the door of the garage so there is no good way to seal it for the multiple coats of paint i have to spray next.

Yeah, you should be able to sand the base, but only if you're going after dirt or some other imperfection in the booth, make sure you use thin coats, and it's dry. If it starts to clump or feel gummy wait a little longer. Tack off the dust. You will need to spray a couple more light coats of base over your sanded color, to even out the metallic. If your candy is a tinted clear, you won't be able to de-nib that, You get what you get...
Saw the other posts. Looks great!!!

Adhesion will not be a problem with clear sanded with 1200 g.
The fear is that using 4 or 600 some/most of the digs will show through, Now, if your taking out a run or other imperfection, you're talking a whole different animal. Two more coats of clear, and you've got yourself a show finish, Uh,... after wet-sanding and polishing your *** off. (but that's another post.)

nah just one door ding it will require filler or 100 coats of high build. highbuild is good for scratches or a so small ding like a pic mark but not a door ding.

thanks guys i appreciate the kind words and intrest.

is that the craziest primer you ever seen

i don;t think it would hold up to well under a clear coat, i bet it would fade real fast... my wife said the same thing though "why not stop know and polish it"

i will most likely be jamming the car this weekend. and if my portable shows up i will be painting the rest i hope.

this is what the guide coat loks like on unsanded primer i left low spots on the edges and more sanding needed on the botom area. the guide coat shows up as a blck spot. nice stuff to work with insures the fillers are level prior to primering them. i will be useing sem spray guide caot for the final wet sand.

i also got a portable garage off ebay 10x20 for 130.00 i'll flair the plastic side when i put em up to give me a little more room. car is about 6' wide so i should be ok. atleast it gets me outta of my garage and house. no i can put my air machine in the air conditioned garage and pump the air out to the booth. should be nice and comfortable. i may not have it by this weekend but i can wet sand the car and maybe sneek in the jambs.

I saw them use that Guide Coat stuff today on Horsepower TV. Neat stuff. I'll have to invest in some when I prep my 'Bird. Better than rattle canning it and risk the can paint not agreeing with the primer or final paint, lol.

Project Resurection Part 7

Here is an update, This is what i did Saturday. Guide coated the car with SEM black guide coat in a spray can. stuff work nice on the primer puts a perfect little coat on it for sanding. I continued to wet sand the entire car with 400 grit paper (wet). It took me abour 9 hours to sand the entire car top to bottom end to end. by the time i was done my arms were killing me. I found one low spot on the drivers door so i will have to fill that and spray some more primer, i also hit a couple thin spots that i wil have to primer again.

Project Resurection Part 8

had to check my numbering almost skipped again.

So here is what i did today Sunday 8/8/04. Taped off lower gfx on bumper cleaned with post sanding cleaner, tack ragged and sprayed my base coat of platnum pearl hok, and the shot 3 coats of clear. also painted the last gfx peice the lower front gfx. The look good except for one spot not quite sure what happend but maybe dalamination? defitanly poor adhesion. i will have to sand the area and reshoot at another time once it is all dry. i think it came out nice other than that one bad spot. my spraying is geting better each time i use the gun. So here is todays pic of the rear bumper gfx. Look at that shine

Thanks Jeff

here is a pic of the crappy spot. must be delam but maybe someone can say exactly what happend. it started with 2nd coat of base or maybe was there on first. i had to keep going since it was about the last of my paint in that color. so will be able to try blending the area in to match the rest of the gfx. So what you think this is and how did it happen.

Thanks

nice shot of the look of pearl

here is the front gfx it came out about perfect couple little odd spots nothing to noticable it wil be good for the car will not need any retouch. i will sand the clear and do the final wet coats when i am ready to do the rest of the car.

Thanks for looking....and for those that want to paint their own car...go for it it is alot of fun to learn this stuff just take your time.

Jeff

the gfx is all shiney it was the flash that makes it look 1/2 dull

Jeff, how many epoxy coats did you end up doing? I checked part 1, but you were unsure if you should spray more.

Once you are done priming, are you going to spray sealer before base coat? Or is that not necessary?

i think in part two maybe...... i skuffed the car with a grey scotch brite pad and shot another coat. there was alot of junk in the first coat that i did not want to deal with through the entire project. so i skuffed em all out and shot another coat. if you first coat is clean i would go with that. check you product tech sheet they will tell you how many coats after flashing (drying).

the product i am using is a sealer or primer depending on how you use it. one quick coat it is a sealer and 3 or more medium coats it is a sandable primer.

i am pretty much hapy with the body right now with the exception of a couple touch ups and then i will shoot the base kandy and clear.

Jeff,

Could you please post updates to one thread only, insted of making a new one every day or so? Also, host your pics somewhere and then link to them.

Thanks.

well is there anyway that you could compile all of them so far? I'm following this I'm not sure about anyone else. But it's turning out excellent and i scan this everday looking for something new. Hell Jeff write up an ongoing FAQ. I'm sure there would also be alot of contributors to it.
