T-top weatherstripping * Rust

Here is my problem. I have rust where the t-top weatherstripping is. Im going to fix it but most of it is beneath the weatherstripping.

Is there any way to take off t-top weatherstripping without ripping the crap out of it? I tried at the junkyard, seems like I could do it if I went slowly. Any tips for removing it?

I dont really want to spend $200 buying a new set, especially since I dont need it. I might just pull a set from the junkyard so if I mess my original up I wll be ok.

I just finished installing t-top weatherstrip on a Buick GN (same basic installation as on a third gen) yesterday, and I would say that its highly unlikely you could remove the weatherstrip without tearing it. What was on the GN came off in pieces, just like the last thirdgen I did. The problem is that the weatherstip is glued (usually just at the center), and the glue is strong enough that you'll tear chunks out removing it. You might be able to do it by carefully pulling the edges out of the channel with a popsicle stick (works great as an installation tool too) and spraying the underside heavily with 3M Weatherstrip adhesive remover, but unless the rubber is in really good shape you'll probably have to get new ones.

I just completed the same project on my 82 and I have to agree that the chances of you removing the weatherstipping (yours or from a junker) withough damaging most of it is pretty much nil. It's pretty much made to go in and stay in.

That's just my experience - can't really hurt to try if you can practice first, but I would recommend saving and getting a new kit.

Well, I got lucky- the weekend I started the project I found the GM kit on eBay for $125 shipped. From what I have seen GMPartsdirect.com sells the kit for around $180 + shipping- but I think it's backordered. Keep an eye out on eBay, but I'd stay away from the non-GM kits.

I just did the same thing with mine. Ended up cutting the channel out and bending new channel and spot welded in the new piece. It would be nice if someone made aftermarket T-top pieces

how hard was that to do? my rust isnt looking too good I got the hatch weatherstripping of my parts car off in 1 piece That was pretty easy though, wish the t-tops were as easy as that. I will try the junkyard again and if that doesnt work to well then I will probably buy a new set.

What kind of adhesive should I use when installing weatherstripping?

It wasn't that bad but it has a bend to it from the factory and I couldn't get the channel to bend right so I ended up just cutting the channel into 3 different pieces. Once I put the new weatherstrip in you won't be able to notice though

I don't think you'll ever get the weatherstrip to come out without out ruining it. If I ever have to take off weatherstrip I plan on buying new

I maybe mistaken, but I believe josh14 switched his center piece out with a nice one from the junkyard. It didn't seem to be to big of a deal if you have the patience and ability. I thought that I'd toss out that option.
