Anybody using an Autometer Speedo (help)

I hope this is the right board to post...
Installed my Covans/Autometer gauge kit, everything fits great EXCEPT the electronic sending unit for the speedo.
I have already destroyed one gear drive trying to force the Autometer sending unit to fit.
Went to my local GM dealer, got a new gear drive, installed it on my transmission, same problem.
I measured both units with calipers and it appears that the outside diameter of the OEM GM gear drive is just slightly larger than the inside diameter of the Autometer sending unit.
These two pieces do not want to fit together.
Could anybody who has successfully installed one of these units put me on the right track?
I will be forced to drive my Beetle until I can fix this problem.
