rear bumper restoration

Hey guys,

I am working on 88 camaro which I bought from a guy who never drove it in winter and for the most part the car is in good condition, but today I took off the rear bumper to see a little surpise and disappointment. Right in the middle of the thing, there was enough rust to push the finger though (several times). The worst spots are the bumper itself, whole chunk of metal gone and ton of rust, and rear hatch which has several rust and one spot fills bad when I press on it. The body itself is not that bad, at least it feels solid.

Here's a link to the pictures I took today. They are in 3 sizes so for those with broadband, you can really zoom in on that stuff.

I hope this is repairable as I have a feeling other thirdgen our there would have a similar thing. My parts car, 86 was even worse.

Any advice, guys?

i would check hawks site for a replacement, same thing with your hatch deck that is also replaceable if the rust is worse than it looks, my 85 was very solid in those areas. surprised your is that bad never seeing winters.

yeah, I was surprised myself. The rest of the car is in generally good condition (for 16 year old car). Fender lips had some peeling/cracking, but you can still feel solid metal there.

I am curious if it is some design thing with 3rd gen camaros in general. I know some cars sometimes have these troublespots because of the way they were designed in the first place. Or is this case just age and wear?
