guide coat

there is many question to guide coat. i have never seen a pic so here is one or three.

i am using the 3m powdered dry coat. you just rub it on and sand it off in an x pattern with a long block. it will show the low spots and high spots. the high spots show up first mental note them of sand em smooth at that point and then the lows are left for either filling or sanding the area around the low.

here is pic one of what the guide looks like. the black pad on the left is the top of the container it has the powder on it.

there were no lows to show on that panel so here is some filler in progress that has lows you can see some lows along the top edge and one on the left where the area is dark after sanding. this image is a bit bigger to help see the guide left behind.

i like the 3m as there is no wait for a paint guide coat to dry this is wipe and sand no waiting. you can use just a watered down primer in your paint gun or rattle can primer or any paint and lightly dust the area. the key is it has to be a diffrent color. if you are using black primer this black powder is of no use to you.

so the point to a guide coat is to make sure everyhtign is even?

and how do you tell where it is low and where it is higher...?

look at the pic of the bondo, you see areas where it is dark black, that is spots that the guide did not come off when sanding with the long blcok so those areas are low. if it high you hit it right away when blocking the primer wil be off and you'll get into the epoxy primer which is a diffrent color. or you can hit metal highs i have found while blocking without guide coat. guide coat helps with the low spots mostly.

also in the pic you can see two real shiney spots those are high spots that i have to tap still.
