Body Prep
Im working on the body work on my 91 bird when i ran into a problem. There is a ton of layers of paint on the car. Even the pontiac on the headlight is pretty much filled in with paint.
My original idea was to take it to metal with aircraft stripper but i ran into a problem. The epoxy primer runs $210 a gallon. This is a little over my budget so i have now decided to just sand it down to its first layer of paint. I will then just apply primer over that.
Now the question. I had already stripped 1' x 1' area to metal to test out the stripper
but the rest of the car is down to the first layer. How can i protect this metal spot from rust? Will it rust out if i spray the reg. primer over it?

if there is that many layers you better off stripping it to metal for the best finish. i sanded my entire car ith 80g to take 4 layers off, 3 in most areas. i found bondo poor repairs and minor surface rust that would of messed up the new paint in 5 years or so. Sanding took a long time and the stripped may be the best way to go at it. i have never tried the stripper.
i purchased my paint from www.Autobodydepot.net
mp170 omni epoxy primer 50.58 per gal
mp 175 omni hardener 13.53 qt (2)
so i;m not sure what your getting for 200 but i would say way to high of a price.

I have no Idea where you got that kind of price.. But it cost me 36 dollars Canadian to spray a good coat of Epoxy primer over my entire car.. that was 24 oz (one full gun) of paint. (BASF EP589) You don't need a whole heck of a lot of primer. All the Epoxy does is seal. I then sprayed 36 oz of BASF DP26 Primer Surfacer . That was a bit more exspensive..

i'm using house of color paint so the 2k primer is called kosealII it is metalic to be the best base for the metalic paint as per their reccomendation
so my 2k cost 117.09 gallon
then the catylist 45.53 quart
then reducer 35.18 gallon (also used for paint)
mixes 4:1:1
not sure if this is good or bad pricing but it is hok so i have to stay with hok after the epoxy. and if you look at my prevous post project resourection part 2 you see what the 2k primer looks like. part one was the epoxy.
no all in all i spent alomst 1k for everything. it can be done for less depending on the efferct you want. i am using a candy 3 stage paint so it is more than say omni bc/cc or dupont ppg bc/cc
all depends on what you wnat the car to look like.

thanx all for the replies.
the epoxy primer they said i needed was i beleive the nason brand (cheapest). they said it consisted of two parts and each was $100. I would rather take it to metal and not have to worry about those suprises later. i just thought it to be wrong to have the primer costing more then the paint kit.
I think i might give some of that omni primer a try.
Another question, do you need several layers of it or just one. Could you get away with buying maybe just 2 quarts?

ok i was searching and i could not find the omni primer on autobodydepot. Anyone have a link, i even tried to search for it by part number.
i did however find this,
DIRECT TO METAL PRIMER
KD2000 DIRECT TO METAL PRIMER - PART A
KDA2000 DIRECT TO METAL ACTIVATOR - PART B
KD2000 Direct to Metal Primer was formulated with a hybrid of epoxy and acrylic polymers, which provide excellent adhesion, good corrosion resistance, productive dry times and ease of sanding. Contains no Isocyanates and can be applied to aluminum, steel, galvanized steel, sandblasted steel or SMC.
MIX RATIO 4:1 - 4 PARTS KD2000 PRIMER/ 1 PART KDA2000 ACTIVATOR.
NOTE: GALLON SIZE REQUIRES 1 QUART ACTIVATOR.
anyone ever give this a try?
