Headliner Removal
Alright I want to rip out my headliner because its old and looks like hell because the people i bought the car off of were chain smokers. I shouldnt have any trouble taking it off, but is there anything I might want to keep from it. Doesnt it have some cardboard backing or something or is it all pretty much just garbage??
Also, to hook up my overhead console how difficult is it to run wires up there?

are you taking it out to have it recovered? or are you just gonna leave it out ? it will look like azz if you leave it out because the welds arent finished above the headliner ..i mean they look really bad usually and doesnt look good ....if you take it down to reapolster it just be carefull and take all the trim pieces down carefully because it can get pricey to buy another headliner board or the plastic trim peices ....

You should already have two wires that you need up there already (Constant 12V and switched ground from the door jam switch). The third one is just a ground. On my car which had the console factory that ground was shared with the map light ground. If you want to recover that headliner you should keep that backing board, if you are planning on getting an ABS backed headliner you can chuck it.

The one things you may want to try and save and re-use are the plastic clips that hold the front portion up. They are spaced along the front edge by the windshield. To save them slide the front of the headliner toward the passenger side to dis-engage them from the roof panel. They fit into a sideways 'T' slot. There will be two or three, depending on if you have a hardtop or T-top.

Not trying to be a d*k or anything, but a Search of the Interior forum will yeild a lot of results for this. There are multiple tech articles, as well.
Remove the entire headliner board as one, and then rip off the material. Otherwise, you're going to end up with a lot of fiberglass and foam all over the car. Remove the trim around the seat belts, the long rear piece on the ceiling, both sail panels, both sun visors, the dome light or overhead console, and take out a couple of screws behind where the top of the sail panels go. Pop the front of the headliner out of the roof (four clips) and rest the board on the rear view mirror and the seats. Open the hatch and out it goes.
From here you have two options: clean the board and cover it with new headliner material or trash the whole thing and get an ABS board already covered in material that's ready to be put on the car. Either way you go, you will want new visors as well.

Thanks guy I just wanted to know what exactly to keep. I think im going to go with an ABS headliner because I think I have a leak in my roof and im guessing that the backing might be screwed anyways. Ill save the clips and toss the rest.
As far as it looking like crap, ive been driving around with a year with no interior from the front seats back so its no big deal I can live with it.

I bought one of the plastic backed headliners from Hawk's Thrid Gen Parts a few years ago. It cost some money, but it was worth it. The original board on mine was not going to hold up to taking the fabric off and replacing it. I couldn't even get the original stuff to stick. Plus the plastic board is nice because you don't need those plastic clips that hold it in the front. I say go for that if you have the money to do it that way.
