Getting rid of the back seats?

Noone has ever sat in my back seats in my car. I'm looking into getting a set of 98-02 SS Seats for my car.....and thought it might be kind of cool to just get rid of the backs seats completely. I already have a nice stereo set-up so I don't want to put speakers boxes or anything like that there. Has anyone modified anything like this before? Maybe make something out of sheet metal or wood..then cover it with carpet? Just lookin for some idea's...thanks

I was planning on deleting them when i put in my roll bar this winter. i was gonna use sheet metal and cover it with tweed lik the rest of my interior. maybe make a little lip so i can set stuff there so it doesn't fall off. I figured i would use the rear "arm rests" as the spot to make the shelf. and sheet metal down to the floorpan.

i was thinkign of the same thing... but i was pondering with the idea of mounting two NOS tanks back there angled at each other so i could just turn around in the drivers seat and turn them on when i wanted to. i think this set up would look bad ***.

It might just be me, but I don't think I'd want two tanks of combustible gas no more than two feet behind me when I get in a wreck. Again, this might just be me

well i deleted rear seats and seatbelts by making a custom amp rack...and once i get ahold of a t-top bag I am gonna make a mounting thing so that the t-tops can be stored on the hump in the rear where the gas tank is...that way i sorta get the storage space back that my subs are taking up in the t-top area....

i am also considering chunking it all, system and amp rack, now that i have a daily driver and just using some MDF to make it look smoother and make it strategic for when I am finally able to enter in a car show Ill have a place to store photos and what not...

if you're doing it for weight savings but still want it to look nice, and possibly be functional, you can remove the back of the seat and leave the foam bottoms.

the bottoms dont weigh anything.... my bottle of pepsi weighs more. but they do cover that missing part of the carpet.. and someone can sit there if needed..

Im with Mrdude_1 on this one. I took out my rear seats for a while and it looked too bare back there without the bottoms.

i did some sheet metal work in a older 2nd gen. basically how you would work a firewall when wanting to hide things. we had a chevy symbol stamped out in the center of it and left it bare for awhile and looked nice. lader covered it in carpet just to seclude it.

i put a speaker box back there angling the speakers towards the rear glass and i have the nitrous bottles where the seat bottoms are angled towards each other facing the front so i can reach back and turn them on.

this picture gives a basic idea of how it went. i'm redoing it this winter though with fiberglass/leather/suede so it should look a little nicer but this did the trick for a budget install.

as far as the seats the 98+ camaro leather will look nice, there aren't any differences in the ss or z28 though.

because i wanted to...

the interior was two-tone with grey and black. you have to see it in person to understand it.

Please tell me one of those bottles is the actual one in the car and you don't have 2 spares.....:lala:

So how's the door handle shaving looking.......

As for 84Custom, it looks bad if the seats are missing and nothing custom is now taking up that space......It's a camaro not a corvette, people expect to see 4 seats and if they don't, it's either because A)It's a drag car in which case back seats would have been gone in the beginning or B) It's a custom show car and the seats have been removed for stereo, amp racks, speakers, pole for dancers or NOS tank installs.....

i hate my back seats, just pulled em out and left it as is. Dont care if it doesnt look perfect my car is not yet a show car. When i have the money to do a cage and other interior stuff ill worry about it then. But for now its just nice not having anyone except a cute girl next to you along for the ride.

I'm just kind of tossing up idea's for now. I'm bidding on a set of 98+ Ebony leather seats on ebay....the fronts only. I'm really not sure about the rear seats yet.

Kandied:

I've seen that picture before and that's what kind of gave me the idea to just delete the seats. But, I don't want to put anymore stereo stuff in the car....sounds fine as it is.

Flynlow:

I agree that if nothing is back there...it really dosen't look very good, kind of red neck'ish.....something will have to be fabbed up if I decide to delete the rear seats. My car is a show car....and noone has and ever will sit back there...dosen't seem like to many people delete their rear seats huh?

I don't see much point to deleting the rear seats unless you actually need the space for something. Audio system or nitrous bottles come to mind. Aside from that, the rear seats offer no noticeable gain in weight savings since they're so light.

I really don't care about weight reduction or anything...I just installed the roll bar, I will hopefully be getting the 98+ ebony front seats, and the back seats are there for nothing, they serve no purpose....so why not modify it to make it fit the car better? Or I could mount my amp or a smaller set of subs....just idea's guys..:lala:

Yeah they are light, but when it comes to weight reduction on a budget, every little bit helps. Even when spending a lot of money on serious weight reduction, every modification adds up. If you dont plan to use them, and you do use the car to race, you might as well take em out. But yeah you're right, dont expect any huge difference.

I take em out of my drift cars to save weight and make room for tires. Removing them dosn't make a noticable difference, but every little bit helps.

what really amazes me are the people that say just what you said... "every little bit helps"...

so they drive around in summer with no AC, no rear seats, ect...... yet when they goto the strip, they wont take 3 mins to unbolt the front passenger seat.... or to unbolt the 20lb muffler from the back.... or to just clean out the car.

sorry.. just venting.

lol...i remember a guy that use to do that. had a vert and unbolted anything and everything possible. even the door pannels all at the track to get that thing a .10 or .2 lighter.

it was funny........if your in competition i suppose but a car that you drive normally everyday is it really worth it for that little bit?

i removed my seats because i didn't want my speakers in the "popular" location that you see so many of them in an f-body. i actually wanted them down where the seats were facing the front but it sounded terrible so i had to prop them up and angle them towards the glass....which left room for the bottles and i could use the upper deck for the amp rack and the rear well for the air tanks. that way everything works out good.

tell you what though the car is damn heavy with all that junk in there but for cruising it's fun!

I noticed you posted about bidding on the 4th Gen seats

I would find an auction where you can get all 4 of them, it will look odd with 2 black leather front seats and 2 rear gray seats or no seats in the back at all......

i use both the tanks thank you very much!
Good deal...

I'll be the third to chime in on the cruising comment

yeah "if" i ever move my speakers to the rear i would rather have the seats then none....it just doesn't look finished. i'm hoping i can get this fiberglass thing worked out and do the interior that way but without anything there it looks really bad for a show car.

I have the back support part of my back seat out atm, it doesn't look like *** though cuz it shows the new black carpet and imo that looks better than the old stained grey seats lol. soon though i'll hopefully have a set of red/black 4th gen seats to put back there
