Repairing interior plastic pieces

The header above the A pillars that the sun visors attach to, is cracking badly. Finding a new one is impossible.

Anyone have any good ideas on what to use to stop the cracking and fill the existing cracks... Gotta get it looking good for Bowling Green this September

Wish I could help. I'm responding to keep this thread alive.

I have no experience with plastic resto but have a thought. Perhaps secure cracks from behind with fabricated plastic straps. Front side can probably be filled and smoothed with a plastic filler. Finish off with interior spray paint.

I'm thinking if there are no specific automotive products for this job, that hobby stores would have some experience; especially those catering to model railroaders. Those guys always seem to be creating plastic models from scratch.

Also, there are a bunch of companies out there specializing in restoring dashes and the like on old cars. I gotta think a call to them might be enlightening. Pick up a Hemmings Motor News for listings.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Wow. A 92 Z convertible, eh?

Yep, a 92 Z Convertible.. Currently saving up for some much needed restifications. I need new leather, and a bunch of new plastic pieces for the interior. The years have been kind in general, but the gal is turning 13 in August (Shipped from factory to ASC on 8/30/91), and until I can acquire the right funds and find appropriate donars, I am doing all I can to keep her in good shape.

I did find yesterday at Wal-Mart an epoxy specifically made for "hard plastic". I wish I had it in front of me, I would post who made it. Anyway, it was hanging on a hook right next to the standard 2 part epoxy. This stuff hardens in a cream color so I used it on the backside.. Takes 24 hours to cure, so I will post more about it tonight. Fair warning, mix and use this stuff outside, the fumes will have your head spinning and throbbing in no time!!!!

Regarding new leather, how does one go about that? You planning to have an upholstery shop do it or find a donor? Been curious about that one for a while. There's probably quite a few thirdgens out there with leather that will be restored over the next 10 to 15 years. It's relatively easy for cloth seat cars because of Classic Industries.

Replacing Leather on seats

Actually right now the plan is to replace the leather with something close to stock.. A couple of years ago when I was living in PA I had some quotes done and was sick at how much they wanted... So I think I am going to do the job myself...

This guy : http://www.mrmikes.com/3rdgen/3rdgenseats.htm has some nice stuff available.. I just wish I could get the "CAMARO" lettering that was embossed into the seats done, but no ne I can find will do it.. Yeah they will stitch a logo on, but I want it as close to factory as I can...

What you need is plastic welder, it comes in a black tube with a 2 part epoxy. It can be purchased at Autozone or Advance or maybe even in a walmart. Its basically what it sounds like, you can repair cracks or anything you wish with it, I've used it in redoing my complete interior swap on broken plastic, best thing you can buy. GL

boy it was fun pulling an interior out of my black bird and then transfering it over to my blue bird.
