What does it cost to get a car painted?
I'm looking at a car, that will definatly need paint, as it is peeling. I'm assuming because its peeling the only way to do it properly is to strip it to bare metal. Any ideas what the cost would be? Basically I just want a cheap paint job, but i'm not going to settle for macco garbage. Think I could get a decent job done in the 3-4k range, or feel like making me really happy and telling me it should be even less than that?

U get what u pay for.But i think u get something done for around 2 if you do not need bodywork maybe less if u find someone thats a painter that does it on the side. The painter at are shop charges 1500 for a complete job.But if u do all the prep work or even just take all the stuff off the car and take it to a shop it will be less.

The best way to do it would be to strip all the original paint off and sand it all down, then take it to a shop that will save a lot of money.
I got it good because my Uncle works for a body shop that specializes in painting, and he does it for a 12 pack if I get it all ready and buy the paint.

Yeah I got it made... my uncle is a painter and everything I cant do with engines and about anything else you would want to do the rest of my family can. I have about 10 family members who are mechanics and a group of cousins who own a race car. So they do everything free aslong as theirs a good supply of beer, and my Dads friend owns a 85 Firebird, a 1970 GTO and a 1971 GTO Convertible with Ram air induction (1 of 12 made) I get to drive them occasionally although he hasnt let me touch the 71 considering its worth about 125 grand and Mint.

I know you get what you pay for, but i'm looking for a median between a $200 macco job and a $20,000 show car job. It sits outside all year, so I don't want to spend a ton, but I don't want somthing thats going to flake off, fade quickly, or just be complete crap. I was just wanted to know about what it would cost for a decent job. If I strip it myself, isn't it going to rust before I get it in, even if its only bare metal for a day or two?
Or maybie I should invest that money in a compressor, some painting equipment, books, videos, errect a tarp, duct tape, exhaust fan, and air filter paintbooth in my garage and take a shot at it.
And yes, Outlaw is lucky

Yeah it would be good to do that, but im sure it aint easy... its pretty much up to you but I would talk to some shops and see what it will cost if you do the work yourself and have them paint it, im sure their will be some more postings of sugguestions that I havent thought of... and I hope you get what your looking for man.
Yeah I am lucky if you lived here he would probably do it for you to.

does it really need to be stripped........do a search on paint and my car and you'll find alot of info on prices and procedures.
i'd say 2-3500 is a decent range for repaints that will last. raise it up another 1,000-1,500 to strip to metal and then pray your guy knows what he's doing since your setting yourself up for disaster opening the metal pores.

The guy I bought my car from painted it after he was in an accident and got all of the bodywork fixed. He went with the factory arctic white paint but added blue pearl to it which makes it look really good and stand out from the rest not that a GTA doesn't already standout. He sprayed 2 coats of the paint with pearl and 3 coats of clear on it. Being that he is a painter and works for a bodyshop, all he had to pay for was supplies. He said if someone were to come in off the street and get that kind of paintjob, it would cost about $3800.

it just needs to be sanded, not stripped down to bare metal....
i just hadmy car repainted, 3100 bucks, entire repaint, all the prep work, minimal body work, besides prep... paint job was some where between good and really good (like showcar) (closer to showcar) quality... i'll have pics soon...

well lets see
Primer- 100 bucks
Sand paper 100 bucks-
sealer- 50 bucks
Paint gun- 250
Labor- free
talking to the paint rep to get free paint and clear - PRICELESS
well since the car is just now starting to get repainted after being down to pare metal on most the car and with primer on it i think i have about 550 into it all with a new paint gun. but the only reason labopr is free is because my dad does body work for a living and knows how to paint as well so i am set on this project
