Lazy, sticky, slow, USELESS power door locks
I just spent the last 30 minutes doing searches but overall came back empty handed.
We have 2 IROCs, an 87 and a 1990 and they both REFUSE to lock or unlock the doors when you press the button. NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES you press the button.
Some say that the actual mechanical parts in the doors need grease/lube. Other posts say its the ground on the relay underneath the kick panels... In the posts it showed people saying "I'll try that", but no one posted results.
So I ask you - What is the best way to make the power door locks work on ONE (1) push instead of 5+ or in my case, not at all?
THANKS!

Hi...
Well, when I got my car, mine did the same thing. When I took off the door panels to replace them, I just lubed everything down really good, all linkages, etc. and now mine work just fine. Try that first before you start replacing stuff. I bet it'll work for you too. Good luck!!

Common problem. The fix in most cases is to clean (I used WD-40), then lube in white grease. You might also find the following link helpful:

Yep. I removed the door latch to lube mine up. Just need to remove the door panel, the rods that are connected to it and then three torx bolts in the door jam and it comes out. Spray engine degreaser on it, hose it off, dry it, spray it liberally with white lithium grease, work it in by moving the latch mechanisms and then re-install it. Should work perfect.

if the lock's are trying to move then the cleaning will work. if they make no movement / or noise then there is a problem in the curcuits. if thats the case then call me, you have my card . most of the time it just needs cleaned throughly .

you might want to see if there is a lot of play in the long rod that runs along the door, there's a plastic piece where it connects to the other part of the locking mechanism that comes loose over time. I secured it tightly again with a small piece of wire(like a twist tie) and my locks work great now.

If its the circuits, I'll definately hand the keys to you... Wiring and circuitry gets me easily stressed hehehe

I know this is 9 years old.. but, what's ironic is the guy complains about how those asking for advice never post their results.. and he did the same exact thing. Just saying.

Re: Lazy, sticky, slow, USELESS power door locks
The fix I found was I totally gutted the door. I cleaned all the rods and tracks for the windows and door locks. I also soaked the door lock mechanism in degreaser. I greased everything with white lithium and reassembled with new door lock actuators and window motors. (I Know this is about the power door locks but might as well take care of everything at once) Now everything works like new.
I totally agree with ssboy that it would be nice if the OP in a thread comes back and says how the problem got resolved and if the advice given actually worked.

Re: Lazy, sticky, slow, USELESS power door locks
I just came across this thread. I used to have a similar issue. My passenger door lock had a crack in the housing and no matter what I did to it the damn thing wouldn't lock/unlock. I took it out, took it apart and noticed that the housing was cracked underneath of the black rubber looking guard. Another thing I did was I removed the door lock relay and replaced it with a body control module from an 01 bird and now the rods literally pop open or closed. The old relay is a piece of crap, so in my opinion I would have to say the part of our problems lie with the component as well as the wiring.
