If you closed the hatch very lightly making the electrical contact, then slightly lifted the hatch quickly, you may have triggered the capture mechanism.
Have you tried using the key to reopen the clasp?
Other than that, check:
Rubber bumper stops are not up too high.
Hatch pull down motor assy might be loose from the body, and have slipped too low to let the capture happen.
Alignment of the steel hook capture loop on the deck lid.

Cargo Hatch Problems
Hey thanks for the reply HeavyBreathinRS. I tried the key and that didn't work. I also used a screwdriver to close the hooks that catch the hatch and they wont lock into closed position. And my hatch pop sylenoid isn't working either. It don't do that loud pop like it used too.

sounds like you lost your power to it. check your fuses or use a test light one the connector to see if it has juice when you hit the pop button. motor may have bought the farm as well, but i would look at power first.

I took the ground wire loose and touched it against the car body and I got sparks. I think maybe the sylenoid is shot. It wont make a sound.

See High Perf Pontiac Oct 2002
There is a story on exactly that problem and how to fix it in High Performance Pontiac Oct 2002. It sounds like your plastic motor mounting boss has broken, and the whole assembly sags. The story shows how you can fix it with a little glue and a hose clamp.
