OK first rule is no bashing or have a brand or product choice war.

Just post what you did and ignore everyone else's post.
I just want to get a good idea of what people did when paint their car. How much and how many steps they took.

If you rattled caned your car feel free to chime in and no one poking fun at them.

If we follow the rules we should have a nice thread with tons of good comparable info.

Some general questions:

How much paint did you use?

What color, brand and type?

How many coats?

Primer?

Wet sanded?

Clear coated?

clear coated, wet sanded and buffed?

Drying?

Factory match fish eye paint job?

Baby bottom smooth $20,000 paint job.

$60 a pint paint?

$20 a gallon Ebay paint?

23 rattle cans and a 12 pack?

Pics welcome.

My dad painted my car with dupont centari, it's an enamel paint. I got the blackest black that was available. (he painted it and I did all of the body work) I used almost 1/2 gallon....didn't paint the whole car, just the doors forward. The paint cost about 89.00 for the whole gallon. Before I painted, I had to fix a few dents, I shaved the antenna, and added the fender louvers from an 81 Z28. I also used black laquer primer.....probably 1/2 gallon of that too. Sanded the primer with 320 I think. Then I used a tack cloth and pre-clean over the whole car to get unwanted debree off. The spray about 3-4 coats of paint on it. Let it dry for about 3-4 days. Wetsanded it with 2000 grit. Buffed the paint with "Perfect It III" by 3M....it turned out really well.....next time, I'd like to try base/clear.

not a very good picture of the shine....but trust me..it shines...and it's baby smooth...

UNFORTUNATLEY you can't go back to your post you spent ten minutes typing, oh noooo! The whole thing is GONE and you get to start all over again! UGH!

Alright, I painted my S10 in one weekend doing all the wrong things. Spray can primer, then lacquer primer-surfacer, no sealer, masked with newspaper, painted it outside, bugs included. Used single stage enamel, a borrowed compressor more suited to nailguns, and a borrowed HVLP cup type gun, cost? About $225 in materials. I call it a good 20 foot job, funny thing is all the compliments I get on it! Did it in October '99. Pic is from Jan '03.

NEXT!

I did my wifes '91 LeBaron ragtop last year. It was sun faded and had peeled clear coat- no rust, just some dings.

Prep was to DA sand with 220, fill in all dings with filler, primer with Nason acrylic urethane, block sand and prime until it was ready and streight with finer paper, ended up with 600 grit.

I built a frame of 2X2 lumber (removed for photo) and covered it in plastic and put 6 20X20" AC intake filters in it, I raised the garage door and fit this in place of it. I put box fans in the garage wndows blowing out. I hung plastic between the two bays of the garage to keep the overspray off my tools and the dust down too. Wet down the garage two hours before spraying.

I used base clear (Du Pont's Chromobase) as the color was metallic grey, metallics work out better in base-clear. I now have a 30 gallon, upright Sears compressor, the biggest water trap I can buy, Savannah is a tropical 90 percent humidity steam bath in the summer. I used a gravity feed HVLP gun (Asian knock off of a SATA design, about $100). I put on two heavy coats of clear.

It came out OK, due to the near 100 degree temp in the garage I had some heavy orange peel in the clear but it all wet sanded out (I used high temp clear activator too) two days later. I have had three body and paint guys tell me it looks great, I however am my worst critic and want to repaint the driver's side due to some mottling of the metallic in the base coat I can see when I park the car in certain lighting.

Cost of this job? About $350 in materals, two weekends.

Can't remember how much beer.

My biggest question.

The difference between the body metal, and plastic bumpers.

Do you sand them down differenty? Do you need a different type of paint? Different type of clear coat?

You need flex agent in your clear and they make flexable primers.

$700 beater.
D/a'd color.
Cold galv treated the lower doors/rockers due to cancer starting to form & 2 coats marhyde surfacer/primer.
Was actually going to put a modest nice paint job on it untill it got belted in the ¼ behind the wheel.
Fixed that and on beer #8 (or 9 or 10) of that fix.. broke out 8 cans of gun metal grey duplicolor ($35) and said f- this car and wasting my time to paint it.... still wasn't awful looking I guess for a smoldering pile of...
I'm glad I never did mess with it since it's probably paper clips by now (edit... rear bumper came from grey car... I "color matched" the rest of the car to it )

On the LeBaron I have not yet painted the bumpers, they don't match EXACTLY but I will do that this summer using the left over paint and yes, I will get the proper flex additive or what ever the paint shop advises.
