rust!!

rust!!

ok so i take the carpet out and i see rust..i was shocked i didnt think there was gonna be that much...but its not that bad just the seat mount bolts on the ground are rusted badly...i have some pics here ok well i cant figure out how to post them so just go here http://www.cardomain.com/id/83firebird so um mwhat should i use to remove it...i have an angle grinder...and a wire brush on a electric drill which ill be using...anything else i should use?

3M makes a die grinder cleaning wheel. Here are some but I don't know if they are 3M. http://car-restoration.e-shopping-ne...anical_2.shtml

If you don't already have the mandrel get the part # 31101.

It seems like alot of money for the project you are doing, but they work great and you will use them on alot of future projects.

Once you get the metal COMPLETELY free of rust, spray it with etch primer and seal it with either paint (automotive not Krylon) or undercoating that dries completely. The hard part will be trying to eliminate the rust under the floor brace.

That car is not safe to drive. Have someone with a welder replace the rusted seat mounting studs.

Yeah, the only real way to replace rot is to cut it out and put in fresh metal. Honestly, the seat brackets dont look that hard to make. Start with some sheetmetal and bend it to shape. Then shape it to the countors of the floor pan. Then drill the holes for the bolts that come up through, buy new bolts and nuts and tack weld the bolts in place and *POOF*, you have new pieces. You also could go to the junkyard and get a set for prolly pretty cheap (you'll have to drill out the spot welds to remove them). Of course, the floor underneath should be repaird before new pieces are installed. Cover the floor pan with Por-15 (http://www.por15.com) and that should do it.

yeah i was afraid id have to cut the brackets out but i guess theres no other choice...and that por 15, nice stuff thanks for the help

sandblast it all, and then take a pick hammer and try to dent all the rustspots, the spots that dent easily have to be replaced because the rust has penetrated to the backside, and of course rustouts will have to be replaced with new metal. Definitely sandblast it though, then you'll be sure to get the rust out of all the pits. and USE A SELF ETCHING PRIMER It's a good corrosion protection.

Just dont sandblast any body panels or chances are theyll warp and become rippled.

thats some serious rust in key places. deffinately need to sandblast and weld in new metal in several places.

yeah 88 WS6--------- does have a good point, sandblasting does create alot of heat, but I haven't warped anything yet. u should be alright as long as it ain't aluminum which you won't find on a 3rd gen.

i dont have access to a sand blaster...is that my only option? i just dont know waht to do with it

no, it's not your only option...it's your best option. you can also grind out the rust with a grinder, but you may leave behind some rust pits. I don't know what to tell you, If it was me I would definitely blast out the rust on the parts that make the vehicle safe to drive, like, where your seat bracket mounts, and your rockers and floor pan.
