4th gen console

quite some time back a post or few were made on how i did my mirror and window buttons:

http://www.pontiactorque.com/quickch...sole_00011.JPG

i use my ashtray for change and the idea of the mirror being in the ashtray to begin with dosent sound "clean" so i studied the console and that is what i came up with.
i hadta extend the wires on the mirror buttons to get them to reach that part of the console.

looks good, but the deciding factor for me putting my switches where the ash tray use to be well I want to be in the normal sitting position to adjust the mirrors. I like to be able to do the windows without leaning forward. But it looks good non the less, I'll get some pictures of my console in a few days up, I took a dremel and cut out the ash tray, and then made a plate for the switches and mounted it underneath the top. It looks stock for the most part, especially when I get some leather to cover the plate right now its just shinny

Oh yea I don't smoke nor do allow people to smoke in my car but if someone did you can get the ash tray out of like a 96 grand am, they sit in the cup holder.

Not sure if I like it... the shifter seems like it would kind of be in the way of the buttons. I liked the idea someone came up with to put the buttons on the side of the console.

As for the mirror, I don't really like it's placement at all. Doesn't look like it's meant to go there... I dunno.

I'm preparing to do the 98+ console in my GTA, and was wondering if anyone has attempted a different combination of switches or not. I did a search, but the results are huge and I can only read a monitor so long before I start to lose my mind. I was thinking of like a 4th Gen mirror switch pack or something like that. Do you think it would work? I swiped these pics off of e-bay for the visual aide factor.

THe mid 90's satern buttons fit, and plug into our harness. The driverside switch off them also has auto down, you press the button and it rolls the window all the way down for you.

the window switches "sorta get in the way but after you get used to its new location vs stock its not bad at all. i had an after thought a short time after i cut the switches, i "could have" put the drivers swith on the dr side of the shift pattern. but ah well, works for me and looks clean.
as for te mirror, i placed it at that angle for 1 reason and it gave another reason for it to sit in that posistion.
due to the contour of the console it fit the most natural there and it gave comfortable access in that position. as for leaning forward, nope, not the slightest.i can rest my hand on the seat and do it with 0 effort.
if i did a 98+ console i would put the winder switches in the TCS and vert roof panel as it would seem natural thereand use 4th gen buttons.
as for the mirror , i would hafta study the console a tad.
i was gonna put my amber lit shift pattern in the 93-97 console next to te window buttons but as i worked it out with my test plate it seemed to be pushing it a bit and there was NO room for mistake.
plus clearance issues with the lip of te base came into play a well so i put it on the back burner for now.

This is my solution, I am going to cover the switch panel in leather when I get a time.

I put the window switches in my 96 T/A center console but left the ash tray door functional so when it's closed you don't see the switches it makes it look clean that way i think. my caar did not have power mirrors. but if it did i would have wired the switch to the drivers door panel like the 3rd gen Camros had it.

Thank you Richard. The only real complex issue was figuring out wires to match up to the GM harness. The switches are from a ford contour (or fairly new ford truck I believe) and the wiring colors don't quite match to GM's harness. The wires do have to be spliced but, there is no extra wires that have to be added.

I did find that since the switches are backlit, certain years operated with the headlight/dash lighting (I'll assume the newest ones) and some were just lit constant. The only thing that has to be done with the dash lit ones is jump the LED wire to the switch power wire (nothing complex at all).

The only other thing I did was grab the trim piece the switch was mounted in so I could have a template to cut the holes in my console.

If you are interested in using the switches, I can draw you a wire diagram from the scribbles I made when doing mine.

And Dave... those are some really nice doorpanels you made

Yup, most of what you've seen are automatic cars. We use the 5-6 speed consoles because the automatic console is slightly to the side of where the 3rd gen shifter is.

Do a search for more info.
