rear defroster mod...
I have a 82 T/A without a defroster. I pulled the hatch and switch and some wires/connector from a T/A exactly like mine... same year and color, that had a defroster. how do i rig this up to work? is there a transformer or solenoid i need? should my stock wiring harness have a plug for the defroster switch? I know that the switch connector i got has 5 wires... the purple one goes to the defroster itself, and then the hatch clips in 4 places on the lift supports.... two on the top, the one on the passenger side is grounded, the one on the driver is the purple wire leading from, the switch. what do i do with the other wires?? is this really a HUGE waste of time, (like **** on a boar) or is this pretty feasible?

I have never done this but for the most part they used the same wiring on all the cars from the same years, just hooked up the acc. that was to be installed. This could be the case or it may not be, sorry not much help here, at least I moved it to the top, LOL you may want to try the electronics board.
One would think there is a regulator somewhere too keep it from getting to hot, but im not sure.

im not sure exactly how to wire it up, but I have a few panels that include the defroster switch on the gauges surround panel. do u need that? I also have the complete interior wiring harenss from a 91 firebird and a 88 iroc, i could pull the defroster wires and trace where they go, you could have those for free. I'm lookign for a NON-defroster glass, will you be selling yours?

hell yes. It's in great shape. do you want the glass(it's easy to remove) or the whole hatch? the glass comes out with something like 12 bolts, including the ones that tie it to the hinges. your welcome to it; make me an offer.
I'm really interested in the switches/panel(s)/harness. when you trace the defroster wires back, is there anyway you could see where they go and either write it down, or label them? that would be such a huge help for me. the guy at the junkyard just cut them for me, so I only know that the purple/white stripe wire goes to the actual defroster. the rest, (there's five total.) let me know; I can have the glass off in a day or two if it doesn't rain.

That is the page you seek. Your car already has the switch harness installed under the instrument panel cover, you just have to take the foam rubber insulator off of it and plug the switch in. From there, I believe all you have to do is plug in the timer (not sure, don't have it, want it though) and run the wires to the back window when you install it.

I don't know whether the timer unit is in the switch itself or is a separate unit. I don't have one, but I have the switch for when I do get one. You might ask someone in the Electronics section about the timer.
You might even make a Tech Article for those of us who want (or need depending on geographic area) a defroster hatch?

i'd just need the glass. i have a 88 iroc that came without the defroster but glass was switched with a different one. My old shop boss wants to buy the car and wants to have it the way it was ordered. I'll go through the harnesses tomorrow. If the timers are in the dash assembly i should have those too, i'll get back to you about it tomorrow. I see you're from lawrenceville, i assume NJ? but anyway, i'll include pics and ill let you know what i got tomorrow, all the stuff would be free to you, i need to get rid of some parts, i cant move in my garage anymore... and if u need any other parts let me know, maybe we can do some type of trade for the glass. I got parts from the following...85 firebird, 87 firebird, 91 firebird, 86 iroc, (2)88 irocs, 92 rs, and other parts form odd and end 3rd gens

veddy interestihng...... actually, it's lawrenceville GA, but I hope that doesn't deter you from trading. I like the trading idea. my email is flyitlikeustolit@hotmail.com , and my AIM is flyitlikeustolit. one name, fairly easy to remember I'll also think abou that tech article; it'd be a big help to anyone who wants to do this later. let me know if there's any other parts you need, because I may be able to round them up in my travels. there's a good number of f-bodies (11 by my count) all 3rd gens, with decent parts on them. doors, a couple sets of t-tops, all kind of stuff.
I looked at the wiring diagram, and it looks like the timer is a separate unit. I'll let you guys know if i see one when I get back from the yard. I could also call a GM dealership, i guess. thanks for your help guys, and smokin, shoot me an email or an im or both.
