Well Mark It looks like you have a very functional 4GEN dash swap. Congrats!! Now The reason I am Wondering about the Wiring and how you made the HVAC Controls functional is because my camaro is the only car i have to drive so it can't be out of comission more than 3 days. With a explanation of the wiring and HVAC controls I am confident I can do this Properly with out RIGGING any thing. Any Help Would be appriciated.

Thanks for the info

Excellent work, Mark. Now all we need is easy to read/follow wiring diagrams for the different model years and such.

Also, someone should really figure out what clusters work with what, i.e. 97 cluster in 98+ dash, 94 cluster in a 97 dash, 93 cluster in a 00 dash. And also which clusters are easier (or damn near impossible) to wire. If we could get this information, I could write up a really good FAQ/Tech article.

if we can get some clarification on how well the console fits with the dash (96 version to 96 version -- or 97+ version to 97+ version), that would be great. Right now I've got a 97+ console and a cracked dashpad... So either I'm going to redo an old console and recover the dashpad (never tried before - who knows) and get rid of the 4thgen console completely (don't think it fits well with the lines of the dash), or do a propper 4thgen dash installation. All the pictures you can possibly take of the fitment, wiring, etc. I will host on my webspace for free.

alrighty, will do...like i said im in the process of writing up the tech article detailing everything needed to be cut/spliced,or re wired in general,as well as vaccum routing, btw,i only have mine set to work the defroster and vents,i might get the floor heat worked up...there is quite a bit of fab work to get the ducting right, and its almost impossible to line out a tech article for that, but i will try too.

ill continue posting progress pics i nthe next coming weeks however,im very busy with my auto shop, usually dont get to work on my personal cars until the weekends or late at night when im closed.

but have no fear, ill get er done

heh,ill break it down like this..

tearing the old dash, console out- 30 minutes

getting the general fitment of the new dash in-about an hour

finalizing some mounting points and fabbing up some new mounts to make it more secure, about another hour

actually test wiring the dash gauge cluster WITHOUT cutting my stock harness, about another hour

after the test wiring, and double, then triple checking and labeling everything,i hardwired everything in place, that took about 2 hours

once that was done the reinstallment of the dash was done,i checked everything back over, made sure i had plenty of clearance for wires and everything, then i yanked the dash back out,put in a new heater core{which took 10 minutes hehe} the reinstallment {mock up} took about a half hour

then theres wiring up the hvac controls, which is EASY,and rerouting all the vaccum lines to the proper solenoids{ for my application and preference} this took ,maybe 20 minutes

then the headlight switch wiring, which i still havent gotten to work 100% yet which pisses me off,i can get EVERYTHING to work off the headlight switch,EXCEPT the headlights wont go back down! ,this is the only thing im currently still working on.

if you add up all the misc things ive done, and redone because of a goof up,or just double and triple checking things,i probably have about 10 hours into it roughly.

im still nowhere near done,i have to tear the interior out so i can put the new carpet kit in when it gets here.

this is actually an easy swap to do,just takes alot of patience. its not something id really recomend anyone to just go out and do,its going to depend on your skill level and ability to follow wiring diagrams and the like,i found myself thinking WTF have i donewith my car?!...the amount of wiring under the dash and the amount of resplicing can be somewhat overwhelming.

pretty much everyone in my town loves the dash,my buddy who came down to hang out at my shop for the weekend saw it and was like BADASS! we drove it over to the gas station where a few friends of mine work, and he had no idea i had swapped it in until he actually looked farther into the car and saw the cluster all lit up,and his response was holy shiat! ]

btw guys,im working right now im this tech article

Looks great.
One question though, the volts look really high in your pics.
Is the gauge wrong or is it really putting out almost 18volts?

If my little brothers car starts up tonight, I'll snap a pic of where his needle sits. If I remember correctly, it was close to the second marker between 13 and 18, but it wasn't past it.
my 2 clusters have 13 in the middle.

If I am not mistaken, stock LT1 alternators are 140amps, aren't they?
