Auto shift **** problem
I have a 1984 Z28 automatic w/overdrive. The previous owner put in an after market shift ****. The problem is I have to use both hands to get it out of park. Do I need to take it in to have something adjusted?? Or just change the shift ****.
Oh yeah, go head and laugh - I am a 98 lb weakling.

Best thing I can think of is to take apart and put some WD40 down in there. Take out the staple on the front, and pull off the shifter. In the shifter handle there is a white peice of plastice, take aht out and put some lubricant down in the hole, on the plastic peice, and then inside the shifter **** itself and reassemble it. I dunno which is best, but lubing up all of those parts is bound to do something.

Sounds like some more than lubricant is needed. Did the previous owner change more then just the ****?
Anyway yours is not a staple type shift ****, those are 87 and later. I think yours is held on by a O-ring on top. You have to push down the button far enough to see it.
Maybe the new shift **** button doesn't push down far enough to easily shift the car out of park.

I don't know if he changed anything else besides the ****. I have the original one for the car, I found it in the back compartment. I don't want to take it off then be SOL getting the old one on.

Unless the previous owner messed with the shift stalk, you should be able the pull the aftermarket one and put the stock one in it's place. If it does the same thing, then it is an adjustment problem.
Post a pic of the aftermarket shifter on your car if you can.

Hi,
I took a picture this weekend. I had to compress it for the site. I also updated my web page with the pictures.

my car had one of those in it at one point. Do yourself a favor and go find a factory **** and put back on it. Those ones are garbage and the set screw come loose causinf it to move and making it hard to shift like you are describing.
