Painting front bumper-Have some ?'s

Hey everyone, I am in the process of sanding and painting my front bumper cover. It is faded and chipping in some spots so I decided to rattle can it for a temporary fix until I get it painted. I started sanding it down with 150 grit today. -What grit should I go up to and should I wetsand? Also it looks like it has "stress cracks" will sanding get rid of those? Lasty for now, should 3 coats of black and then 3 clear coats be enough? Thanks.

I just barely did what your talkin about, cept I switched from a crappy sport coupe to an RS nose....

I used 220 on the whole thing, went up a little to redo it, and then I rattle canned it with duplicolor... TUrned out really nice. I used 400 grit on the paint, several layers, not a single run

id say if your puttin on clear coat, put a few coats on, and use 2k grit on it to make it all nice lol...
Check out my sig for the final result

that looks good! so you wetsanded with 400 grit after every coat? I have another question. How long do I have to wait to use rubing compound and wax?

I read on a paintshop site that you should wait a month, but i personally dont know... Rubbing compound takes paint off. My car has a CRAPPY paint job, and i used rubbing compound, ripped a lot off because of lack of clear coat, lol. Ya, the wetsand idea sounds right lol

sand it down to the material where the cracks are and try to get as much of the paint off as you can. sand it with 220 all over the place after that 150 and hten prime it with about 3 coats, sand the primer and re prime where needed, once done with final sanding, spray paint, one light tach up coat, let it dry for like 5
tehn 2 more let dry inbetween and then clear, same thing, u gotta let it set between coats

you can buff next day, if its dry, make sure you use hardner in the clear, adn dont use rattle cans.

A lot funner wet sanding after a month, get to lose 10 lbs sweatin your **** off and then your arm will look like popeye's Seriously, like Charged said wait 24-48 hours for the clear to get hard, this will make it hard enough to wet sand but not hard enough to make wetsanding an arm buster!

Rattle-cans can work great, especially if it's just temporary; because then you really have nothing to lose! The directions on the back of the can of paint and clearcoat should tell you how long to wait before applying rubbing compound. For the best results, definately use a clearcoat.

I did this on my "new" (new to me!) passenger door; it came out great. Kept meaning to take pictures of it... now it's wayyyy too damn cold to think about washing Anything outside!

Well, rattle cans work great, right, well as i paint cars all damn day at my shop, i tend to notice the difference between my 500 dollar spray gun and a rattle can, but to each its own....

I think this is the key part Charged350. A good rattle can looks a hell of a lot better than just primer, or if he just sanded it and left it. Of course you are going to see a diffrence between your gun and the can...but it doesn't make any sense to paint each piece individually at a paint shop because there is no way even you could make it all match when he is done. Using rattle cans is a good way to keep your car looking decent while you are slowly replacing or upgrading parts.

well today i went ahead and rattle canned it with about 3 good coats. it is just a temporary fix until i get it painted. everything turned out good so far, no runs or anything. it is a little dull though. i still need to put a couple coats of clear on though. will the clear coat make it shine soem? do i need to sand before i put that on? if so what grit? what can i do to get a little shine? thanks.
