speedo question

I just got a 91 RS today, and the speedo doesnt work, the guy i got it from said it works sometimes and not sometimes, and i can see that it has worked since the inspection was done. What could be wrong? and if possible please provide pics of what you are talking about, and some help as to how to get the gauge cluster out. (im new to this style dash)

look at the tailshaft / tail-end of your transmission on the drivers side, if it has wires that plug into the transmission it is a eletric speedometer. It is a cable driven speedometer if it has a pencil thick cable going into the transmission. If its electrical chances are the easy fix is to check the plug, wires and other connections. If it is cable driven, chances are you will need to remove the cable, run a little oil/trans fluid through it to lube the cable and check if the speedometer is worn out, try and spin the backside of the speedometer housing and see if the needle still moves, if not the speedometer is junk ( you will need the speedo out to try this) good luck

If you have a '91 then you'll have a VSS at the transmission where the cable goes into the trans. Check it to make sure it is tight and snug. If it is ok check the other end of the cable going into the back of your cluster.
