Lookin to make my RS.....an SS. need opinions/help

Hey all, I am strongly thinking of taking my 3rd gen and making it an SS. I have yet to decide on which style I want to do it in...look liek the 4th gen ss' or the 1st gen ss'. On the first gen did they all come w/ stripes like the 4thgen? If so what kind (pix would be nice)? Aslo, what hood did the 1st gen ss' have? I have seen tons of 2.5 cowls on them but I have also seen the plain flat hood. Problem with the first gens is that 99.9% of them aren't stock! They are all modded up, changed, painted different, etc. Pix of actual completely stock (body wise) 1st gen ss' would be GREAT. If I end up doing this I'll keep my hardtop RS and fix it up to be an SS' but if not then I think I am gunna sell this one and get a t-top. Either way i'll be having atleast sum kind of 3rd gen my whole life ....just can't getr enuf of em.

thanks guys, hope you guys can provide me w/ the info I seek....see ya.

There's a book, "Camaro" by Anthony Young, with a ton of pictures from all four generations you should probably look at. The firstgen SS didn't have hood stripes, stock it was just a flat hood with a couple vents at the back. I would go with the 4th generation style. Then you could get the SS emblems from the Chevy dealer, fill in the existing emblems and put those on.

Do they make SS emblems to go where you have your RS/Z28 emblems now? That's the hardest thing at this point is finding the emblems. I want one on the front grille, then in the back and 1 on each lower side on the gfx. Basically just where they have the Z28/RS emblems and then on the grille. If anyone can point me to sum pix/places to buy these that'd be REAL nice.

I made my RS look like an IROC-Z, I got the stripes and emblems from autografics.com ...Their "SS" emblems are decals that go over the existing plastic emblems. You can get the hood stripes from there too.

Wait, so these just go over the existing decals? They aren't stand-alone?

They're flat in case you shave the spot for the emblems, they're meant to go on the existing ones. They're cut exactly to size so it looks original once you put it on, the lettering is slightly raised from the black background and is metallic. I don't know of any place that makes a plastic SS emblem for thirdgens since there wasn't an SS model.

If you don't mind filling in the recess where the old emblems go you can put the 4th gen emblem there or 1st generation ones from classicindustries.com

tpiroc's car is an "ss":

hmmm, how would you go about filling them in? just puddy it up and then paint? I guess if there is a way that might not be that bad of an idea at all, and would prob. look better than those stickers.

Ugh, I wouldn't do it. It looks kind of silly to me, there never was a thirdgen "ss" car, badges on one looks poser-ish. Reminds me off all the cavaliers with "ss" on the side, various other turds with "ss" on the side, etc. It's just over-played to me. It's like the ryce boys putting a GTR badge on a civic DX. That also was obviously never made and regularly these guys get ripped on for it.

I love TPIroc's car, but would not have done the whole "SS" thing to it. Just my $0.02 for your ponderence.

I agree completely. There is nothing worng with doing everything you want to your car to make it look like an SS, just as long as you don't call it one.

Well it's not going to look stock whatsoever. I am prob. going to do the 35th anniversary stripes w/ the SS hood. The stripes I want to have modified though. If you have seen them (which I am sure most of you have) they fade off into a checkered look then are absent on the top, then continue on the back. I am gunna do the front curved part (looks better w/ the hood IMO) but keep it a solid stripe all the way back, including on top.

I am not trying to pass it off as a 3rd gen SS, haha. I am just copying the 4th gen SSs'. A 3rd gen-4th gen SS conversion if you will, haha. As with most stuff done w/ our cars, some people like it, others dispise it. I dont really care what people's opinions are (but I am always open for suggestions). I really just want to do something different, something that stands out. I have never seen something done like this before and I think it'll look pretty cool.

Way to contradict yourself. Does the thread topic of "Lookin to make my RS.....an SS. need opinions/help" sound at all familiar?

Don't ask for opinions and then say "I dont really care what people's opinions are" a few hours later, that looks awfully childish.

Let me clarrify, I am looking for suggestion on what to do to make mine an SS. Not opinions on wether or not I should make it an SS. I am pretty set on making it an SS, so that wont change. I want suggestions/opinions on what to do to make it look like an SS. Hope this clarifies any misunderstanding :-\.

So far I want the 35th anniversary SS-esque stripes(look above for further description) w/ the SS hood. I think the grille I am going to get is the "camaro" one (the one that is solid and says camaro). As for actually putting foglights in...I dunno? It's not going to be a daily driver at all and I dont have the internal switch (so that would be another thing to do, and prob. a pain in the *** too). Any suggestions on what to put in the holes where the foglights go?

I want to get the grid tail lights.

As for wheels....I am open for that. I really like Cragar SS's but would the wheels the new SS's come w/ look better (dunno the names of em')? kinda in limbo about those 2 . I am pretty set on 15'' wheels but could do 16'' if I saw pix of them (depeneds on the wheel of course, that's why when I decide on a wheel....i'll decide on the size). How does 12'' wide for the back and 8'' on the front sound? I want the whole wide-tire-look in the back and plus i'll be taking this baby to the strip (when I get a new engine in it...the 2.8 isn't a racer, haha)

I believe I am going to do a nice high gloss jet black paint w/ silver stripes. I have pondered ghost stripes but haven't seen very many pics of it so I dont know how that would look.

I want to go w/ the 91-92 gfx....I dont know how hard this is going to be, I have heard conflicting installation instructions but I should get that sorted shortly.(a guy said he did the conversion on his and it had the holes, plus other bar things whereas this other guy said his just had the holes and to where mine already has the holes they should just sit right up in place....who knows)

I am pretty sure I want to stick w/ my fin instead of getting a spoiler BUT I am still not all the way sure on this. If I do get a spoiler though I want the standard one, not the high-rise. Any opinions?

Upon looking at the decals further, I like the SS sticker ones that look like the RS-Z28 3rd gen ones. I think i'll stick w/ these.

Thanks a bunch for everyone's feedback. I know this seems like a lot to decide on all at once but I like to plan things out and know where I am going before I start such a big project. I guess that's just the way I am , haha. Well lemme know what ya guys have to say, later.

i say its dumb to make a third gen into a "ss" because there were none made, it is not like you are going to fool someone into thinking it is a reall "ss" because there was no "ss's"

i just dont get why people try to make their cars into something that tehy arn't if you want a ss, then go get yourself a 1st or 4th gen ss

Car: 2016 Camaro SS + ???
I agree with the don't make it an SS thing, but that's a moot point....

Here's some some suggestions. If you're lloking for the old school muscle look, the 15" wheels would be OK, but leave off the GFX. The ground effects give the look "effect" off being lower. Sleaker, kinda g-machine like, kinda "new school" sports car less old school muscle car. The big fattie rubber in the back is SOOOOOOO Old school! Not bad, just old school.

By all means..do the engine FIRST!!! ...and since you have a 2.8, figure on the tranny and rear end and suspension/chassis too. Hate to have to worry about paint when you're doing all the drivetrain/chassis work.

If you make it all show, and no go first, you'll get crap from the minute you wake up till the minute you go to bed. Not that some on here haven't done it, and I won't give ya any crap, but with the attention the car "should" get....you're gonna be hatin' it.

As far as the book by Anthony Young: Good book, Tons of info, I loved reading it. I've never seen a book with more aftermarket camaros in it ever!!!! Do NOT look to it as a resource as to what options were available. Just the thirdgens alone...there's a black 90 Iroc with chrome rims, and an 84 Z with Borla exhaust and 17" Fikse rims. (i think)

Thanks Pearl Jammzz,
I've got a 327 I'm goint to slap some LT4 gear onto and back by a T56 (I HOPE so about the T56). I've got the 327 so far . Also, I am currently diving into my '93 Camaro dash installation, '94 Firebird door panel installation, and already have the '93 Camaro seats in. The only other plan is completing the tilt hood conversion; I have the tilt mechanism from a 90's Buick Park Avenue and a spare butcher hood to play with to get it just right

so it pivots on the front of the hood, and not the back, basically the back of the hood will lift up, not teh front like it should, like how a corvette front end lifts up

pretend the little slashes are the hood and the front of the car is on the left side it would be like / not like \

That hood setup looks like it'd just make it more difficult to work in there.

The main purpose of the hood is for the "wow" factor, it's a show hood modification........

It looks cool and draws attention to the car, that's it's only function.......

And hey, you don't have to worry about your hood flipping open while driving down the interstate.......
