my girlfriends 85 was doing that, and it turned out to be the edge of the dash pad rubbing on the a pillar's. She stuck some small foam pieces in there and it went away.
Other than that, I know that there is supposed to be 2-3 foam blocks under the pad to support it. Are your's still there?

I went through this when I did my heater core. Pull the pad off, it's not that hard. Once that is off you will find the duct work, it squeaks where the tubes go together. a small spluge of silicone will help hold them together w/o squeaking. Then look at all of the places that the plastic pieces overlap. i either put a piece of duct tape between them or used silicone. I carefully tightened all of the screws and placed a dab of locktight on all of them. Look around and find where the wiring is just hanging out and tie wrap that up. All of this will take about an afternoon and is well worth the effort. It's also not very difficult to do.

Also, there's like 8 or 10 screws (7mm) holding the dashpad on. Make sure you have all of them and that they are tight and not stripped out. Mine was missing several when I first bought it and it rattled like crazy. Replaced them and away went the rattle.

I hate the interior, i hat eall the ****ty parts that gm decided to use to save money, i hate the fact that that frame flexes cause GM didnt think to re-inforce it. I hate the ****ty glue they used for the arm rests, i hate the ****ed up idea they had for the wheel wells, so they are inevatably gonna rust.
i say **** GM and thier ****ed up ideas.....

Also I forgot to add it is clear. It also rubs off easily if any extra squirts out. It just provides a little cushion between the panels is all. Keeping the interior trim screws tightened on a regular basis will go a long way towards cutting down the squeaks and rattles. You can also use something like DynoMat on the panels to kill their vibration. Just be sure that you heat the metal and DynoMat a bit or it won't adhere worth beans.

of course that feeling goes away every time i turn the key. but none the less, as soon as i replace All the seals, stop ALL the rattleing, and get SFC's.... ill always be disapointed with this car.

I usually just turn up the radio, or start playing with the girl sitting next to me. One way or another, something gets louder than the dash noise!

Personally I would take the dash pad out of the car, if it is a good pad, for the winter and replace it with a cracked one. If it is making cracking noises it is probably getting stressed and might end up with a crack in it. There was a bunch of people, me included, who had theirs crack last winter.

Hey! GM already publically apologized for their cheap methods of producing cars, what more do you want?
