well I Thought that the 4 metal contacts on the back hatch in the 87 need to be replaced with it? so the whole back piece should be replaced as well? and the back hatch? I cant remember if that has a contact? thnks

The four metal contacts are not a part of the rear hatch pull down motor and the four metal contacts are only held in with two screws.

Yes you can use that 1987 pull-down unit in your 1988. The 1986-87 hatch pull-down unit has a large white connector on the blue wire which connects to the +12v red with white stripe wire. The 1988-91 has a smaller black connector on that same blue wire. You'll need to swap connectors. That is the only change you'll need to make in order to use it in your 1988.
It is a common misconception that the 4 contact pad has something to do with the hatch pull-down unit. It does not. From 1982-85 that pad was used to power the optional rear hatch wiper motor. From 1986-90 it was used for the HMSL (high mount stop light, aka third brake light).
Be sure to check out my web site under the "Hatch Pull-Down Items" category if you find that you need any parts to repair the hatch pull-down unit.

Lon - thats what i thought but didnt know for a fact it was standard. Just cause he said it was a nice feature..I figured his other car was just a normal hatch latch like older 3rd gens. Or i guess someone could of made it a normal hatch latch cause they break alot i dont know??
Thanks tho
but is it possiable now that i think of it to put a hatch pulldown on a 3rd gen that didnt come with it??

Your 1988 already HAS the correct mounting to install the power hatch pull-down unit. I haven't seen a 1986-91 that doesn't. Pull out the plastic hatch surround trim and take a look. More than likely someone has converted the power hatch pull-down to a slam latch by welding or drilling then bolting the latch portion to the frame of the unit. All you'll have to do is undo the 3 mounting bolts and bolt in the 1987 hatch pull-down unit. Mark the location of the current bastardized unit first with a scratch awl or a permanent marker. It makes installing and aligning the new unit much simpler. Then you need to verify +12v at the red with white stripe wire. Also if yours has a powered hatch solenoid release, be sure to install the ground wire from the 10mm bolt to the grounding point below. Otherwise the solenoid won't work because the nylon guides are isolating the latch portion from ground source.
