stupid cable driven speedo
WHATS UP! ok i did some searching around but I couldnt find a straight answer. I have an 84 trans am with a stupid stupid stupid cable driven speedo... I was wondering whos installed an '85+ cluster in their birds.. most of the searches came up with camaro swaps.... also i noticed that the cluster from the 84 has the fuel gauge on the last gauge pod whereas the 85 has the fuel gauge on the 3rd pod... i think thats right.any suggestion ideas comments all welcome. thanks

i don't know about firebirds, but the camaro wasn't changed from cable to electric till 1990. my 89 has a cable driven speedo. i did a v8 swap and when i got the new tranny home out of a 1991 z28, i realized that i had gotten an electric speedo tranny, here is what i did to rectify, although most will say just to do the swap, i have to keep my stock cluster intact for the American Muscle class with the NMCA...

You'd need to re-pin the connector as the wires are in different locations in the earlier ones, and find a buffer box and VSS sending unit for the transmission.

im in this same boat, id like to go electric, every time my tranny hits the 1-2 shift nice and hard, the needle jumps around, not to mention knowing my speed above 85mph would help
