best stuff to reseal hatch after align

so i pulled my hatch apart to re align the deck and spoiler, and stop the leak i had, damn that glass is heavy..........

the original sealer was a black sticky stuff looked like it was a long round peice and it has some kind of foam thing close to the top where it meats the glass.

what should i use for the reinstall? i read silcone works but i kinda wonder since this black stuff is still flexable after all these years.

and where can i get this foam thingy or do i even need it?

Thanks Jeff

The product you are looking for is called modular tape. It comes in different types with a foam core built into the center to help seal properly over uneven surfaces.
The diameter required for this is 6mm. Norton is one company that makes this stuff. Part# is AT6070 if you really want to be correct. Check local glass shops for the product. It is used in installing many types of 1/4 glasses and backlites on various vehicles, but Ford in particular. Place the tape on the deck roughly 1/2 inch from the edge and as you tighten glass to deck, the tape compresses and rolls out to the edge of the deck. Start 1/2 inch over one end of the deck and go across entire deck area until you have overhang on the other end. You can trim excess modualr tape off after glass is installed to decklid. Ensure that the back plastic corners are urethaned back into place as well. They help seal the transistion area between the glass and the deck when they mate with the weatherstripping when the hatch is closed. Use locktite on the decklid bolts and torque properly remembering its glass not sheetmetal. I like to tighten it like a headgasket and start from the center and roll out to the sides.

I used black silicone sealant (from a squeeze tube - I had popeye forearms after that) on my new car - it hasn't been in long, but so far so good

I used monkey sh*t. I don't know the real name for this stuff, but it comes on a roll, with paper between it to keep it separate. It's black, and very sticky. It's often used to seal side glass and rear windows into cars. Anyway, it's non-hardening, but is very stiff. I used it on my GTA over a year ago and the seal is holding up beautifully.

That sounds dead up like the same stuff I used. I got mine at autozone. It's in a flat square box with all the other sealants.
As an extra step for overkill on mine, I ran a fine bead of black rubber sealant across the front of the decklid as well.

This is 3M's version of the crap I used...

The stuff you guys are describing is modular tape. I think it has been stated before but the reason you want to use this is the fact it tends to reseal itself if the joint is broken. Silicone, urethane, and other caulkings will work okay, they just do not have the ability to reseal like modular tape.
