painting 3rd brake light

Car: 91 Z/28 convertible
Engine: 305
Transmission: 700R4
painting 3rd brake light
i have a 91 z28 convertible and i want to take third brake light out and paint it black to match car but when i hit brakes i want it to light up 91 Z28 whats the best way to do this to make it look best and and shine bright red

you can take it out and tape the whole light off with good masking tape (that doesnt bleed) then take a sharp hobby knife and cut out the letters...then remove eather the letter or everything else then paint it black...remove tape and volla.
The best way of doing it is measure the light and get a sign place to make you the letters or outline of them(witch is the same thing you just remove the letters) with vinal and you can stick that on your light. This would be the best as you can take it off if you ever wanted too and you dont cut or sratch your light cuting on it with tape, plus you can get any font you want and it will look perfect. I actually cut out the letter useing black tape that I put on my 3rd brake light on my old grand am. and didnt paint it gust left the black tape there.

I used vinyl lettering & spray painted over it with Krylon Fusion paint (3\4 coats, I think). Then when it was dry, used an exacto knife to take the lettering off.
