hmmm hood idea.

Here is the spot i am in. I love my current iroc hood but it seems like it weighs in upwards of 200 freaking pounds. As far as aftermarket hoods there isnt anything that i like. My idea is to get a plain flat fiberglass camaro hood (im pretty sure ive seen these before?), finding a set of louvers that look similar to my iroc ones but are actually open louvers and would be able to serve a function of allowing hot air to escape from the engine bay. Then i would just cut two holes to the exact shape of the louvers and find some way to attach the louvers on the bottom. What im wondering is does anyone see a problem with this idea? What happens when you cut the middle out of a sheet of fiberglass? Structurally would it hold up or would i need to look at putting bracing in? Any input is welcome.

Only place I have found that makes plain flat fiberglass Camaro hoods is www.up22.com but I have heard a lot of problem with their quality and theri fit. However, since you have no other choice (that I know of) pay a boddy shop to do the hood along with the modifications. Make sure they receive the hood in shipping and make the call on if it is good enough to use or not. And it would probably take a good body guy to make the hood look right, again, with the fit of these hoods. You might want to have some kind of bracing on the underside of the hood around the holes to maintain the structural integrity, but I am not sure on how to do this. Good luck with your project.

was your car stock with a fiberglass hood because i was under the impression that it was a plastic/some other material blend however that might even be better to work with! I was contemplating doing the cutting and mounting and everything my self but for what the hood would cost me and for the chances of me not screwing it up taking it to someone would probably be my best bet doubt itd cost me too much to have them do it. I'm liking this idea the more i think about it the only down side is im not going to want to drive it in the rain (which i HATE doing anyways) because all of that water will get into my engine bay blah, oh well the cool factor should offset the pain of constantly having to clean the engine bay to keep it looking half descent...Any more thoughts guys?

i would also say go with a stock 82-84 crossfire injection hood. They also have little scoops at the back where there is an indention almost like where you would mount louvers but cant that you can leave open to let gas escape.or you could mount louvers on it to and still have that opening at the back to let air out. You would have to do drilling to mount louvers.

nevermind did some looking and it seems all 82-84 z28's came with that style hood. Was the fiberglass part just an option or did they all have it?

Fresh air induction hood scoops were functional on the Z28 with Cross Fire Injection; production 24,673. in 82. It was an option to have crossfire. The z28 could choose cross-fire or carb and the crossfire got the glass ones.

i found a couple good pics of the hood but theyre all too big and im too lazy to deal with em and post em. The only problem im seeing is that if you cut out that section and put the louvers in that the area nearest to the windshield is higher then the part closest to the nose....not sure what id do about that.

The other question because im not completly clear is that are the 82-84 z28 hoods appearance the same as the cfi ones? and the cfi ones are just fiberglass?

here are some pics i took of a hood like that at a junkyard.... it definitly felt lighter than a stock hood....
i posted them up a while back, and people told me that when you are thinking about buying one, make sure they arent cracked or anything like that because they become brittle over time. just giving you the heads up, and hopefully i helped you out!

okay now i have to step back for a second. I want to do a hood similar to the iroc hood i have just putting functional louvers in. It also has to do with a stripe pattern i want to do. The cfi hood wouldnt allow me to put two different louvers spaced out because there is no space in the middle. I basically want to recreate my iroc hood but with functional louvers. Is universal products going to my only option for a flat camaro fiberglass hood because i did a search and they have a really awful reputation? any other sugestions?

EDIT: my crazy friend is trying to convince me that we could make a fiberglass mold of the outside of a plain camaro hood, then just take the metal frame and attach the fiberglass to it. Would make it a bunch lighter meeting my needs and then i would have a flat fiberglass hood....
