Car: 88 GTA
Engine: 350, 383
Transmission: T-56 & 700R4
Well, besides running down the VIN,
GTA's had no fender vents, but do have TA mounting holes (ground effects),
Interior doorskins are GTA specific,
Front Seats have look of later TA's, mainly E.T. style headrests,
GTA embroidered map pocket on dash,
Overhead console, with directional map light and a bunch of B.S. appointment reminders.
May or may not have GTA emblem in horn button(some GTA's did not have this),
GTA (Gold) mesh wheels,
Holes present in nose/bumper cover for mounting of nose GTA emblem,
GTA emblems (correct location on sail panels? (B-pillar)).
These are offhand indicators, of what IS or ISN'T a GTA, without having to run a VIN decode.

Car: 1989 TransAm GTA
Engine: One sweet modified 355 TPI.
Transmission: The kind that shifts....
ALL GTA's had the following.
Gold Firebird emblem in the center section of the Tail lights. (Except 91-92's, they had "Pontiac" silk screened in gold centered between the two tail lights)
GTA: TransAm emblems on nose and fenders
Gold firebird emblem on sail panels
Gold Crosslace 16x8 rims
"ventless" Fenders.
Power Lumbar Seats
GTA's COULD have the following.
Steering wheel Radio Controls (no 87's, 88-89 could have them, 90+ got the Airbag so no controls)
Digital Dash optional (not offered in 89, or the following years)
88' Notchback (optional)
Split rear seats.
Either GTA or Gold Firebird Logo embroidered on the map pocket.
5.7L TPI (L98) / Auto was standard.
5.0L TPI (LB9) / Manual optional
5.0L TPI (LB9) / Auto Optional (peanut cam)
Dual Cats (became standard later in 91)
I believe this to be a fairly complete and accurate list. I have read over the FAQ and TA GTA info on www.transamgta.com . I do not know everything however, so I may have forgotten to include some info.

Car: 89 Trans Am GTA
Engine: 350 stock (big mods coming up)
Transmission: automatic for now (T56 coming)
Besides, the GTA has for some reason 10 more hp than the base T/A on the 5.7 and the 5.0. Then it was the only model besides the turbo T/A that came with the 3.27 gear.
The GTA also had the WS6 package standard.
By the way, why don't you lazy people make a search before asking things that have been posted too many times?
The info I just wrote down, I got it from the tech data page from this website.
Anyways, if you don't really care about having a regular T/A or a GTA, get the T/A, and buy the rims from ebay.

I'm on https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/techdb.shtml which is certainly part of this site, and it clearly shows that the IROC-Z, Formula, Trans AM and GTA all had the same power with the same motor. I believe the difference between 230 and 240 horse setup is the single vs. dual cat option. It's possible that this came standard on the GTA... I don't know.
But in either case, it was the exact same motor, and that 240 horsepower option was available on all of the other models.
You'll find a million power discrepancies with literature no matter what model you're looking at. Even GM couldn't keep consistant numbers. In most years the Camaro was rated 5hp higher than the Pontiacs just because of the different airbox. All of these numbers get tossed around so much that it's no wonder there's confusion about power output in these cars.
